Serious news show The Colbert Report is likely to get a little silly next week, when presenter Stephen Colbert faces off with Decemberists guitarist Chris Funk in a guitar competition live on TV.
Colbert upset the indie darlings on November 29 last, when he introduced the segment "Look Whose Riding My Coattails Now" in which he accused the band of stealing his idea, referring to the 'Re-animate the Decemberists' competition Funk & co. ran on their website.
The contest, which is still running, invites fans to take a video of the band performing 'O Valencia!' in front of a green screen and create an animated backdrop to be used in the final cut. Colbert suggested that the band stole the idea from a similar competition he'd run back in August.
The Decemberists fought back via their favourite website PitchforkMedia.com (we're not bitter!) with Funk issuing the challenge to Colbert. The story was soon picked up by the Associated Press and media ensued (very messy). Colbert accepted the challenge, and the contest goes ahead next Wednesday (December 20).
