Protest The Hero tease 5th LP

2019-11-07 by Toondude | 43 Comments
Canadian prog metal group Protest The Hero have officially announced an update on their 5th studio album, along with a tease of some of the recording sessions on Instagram.
The band posted a statement on social media:

It feels glorious to report that tracking for LP5 has finally been completed where it all began - at Jukasa! This record has been an insane labour of love, spanning the last two years, but she's finally in the bag and off to mix.
We spent the last few days tracking live keys, quartet and acoustic geets live in this beautiful room. Thanks to all the players who gave us their time and incredible skill over the last 48 hours.
The video is just a tiny bit of what we worked on, but we are excited to show you what's next soon..."

The new album will be the band's first full length since 2013's Volition. There is currently no official release date as of yet, but it is expected to come out sometime next year.

Everything after Fortress for me is a thumbs down (except "C'est La Vie", I enjoy that). I want the old crew back together : (

I enjoy some stuff off of all their albums but yeah Kezia and Fortress are on a different level than anything that came after. I have almost completely lost my taste for Rody's vocals over the years but I'll probably check this out when it finally drops.

I'm hyped to hear the guitar licks and shit but I have the impression the album will be like Pacific Myth with more orchestra

Those small previews sound promising. High hopes because these guys are talented as fuck.

Scurrilous was a low point, but Volition and Pacific Myth slapped hard. I'm so excited.

Incredible band. Can't wait for this. Kezia is one of my favorite album ever.

My other sticking point with this band was to not see them live, because every live performance I've ever seen sounded so incredibly sloppy.

Every time I saw them live I thought they were great! Maybe you got a bad night?

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw you said every show and not one show

I saw them play at Warped back in the day, and they were tight as hell.

Hm, just listened to some clips that I thought I remembered and weren't as bad as I thought. Still don't like Rody live though.

Yeah I've seen them in 2008, 2009, then twice in 2018. The first two shows I remember having the worst sound (maybe the venue) but I could't really get into their live sound. 2018 with Coheed with pretty good, and then seeing them play all of Fortress later in the year was AMAZING. One of the better performances I've caught. They're great live. Maybe it depends on the night and the venue and where they were with their career. Hearing Fortress in its entirety live while stoned out of my tree was HEAVENLY and something I'll never forget. Flawless.

Cautiously optimistic with this. Haven't really gotten into anything they've released since Fortress.

This is the news I've been hoping to see every single time I check this site.
Either that or news on a new A Wilhelm Scream album.
Can't wait to see what these guys do next!

They've def gotten tighter over the years. When they first started touring for Fortress they were pretty sloppy

When their bassist stopped writing their vocal melodies the band got worse. They're still REALLY good however and I'm excited to hear new music from them.

TBH him leaving the band was pretty detrimental to their sound.

@bloc yeah I can corroborate that. I saw them touring Fortress way back then and it was just not great, but this Fortress anniversary show was one of the best I've seen.

I miss Arif tho

I remember seeing them open for Avenged Sevenfold when they were like 18/19 years old, and Kezia was their only album. Rody was so busy bouncing around the stage, doing mic tricks, and crazy shit, that it really hurt their sound. Their energy was amazing!! But it didn't do a good job showing what they were capable of.

I went to the Kezia 10 year anniversary show a couple years back, and it was INCREDIBLE!! They've settled down on stage, and focus more on nailing the music. The opening 20 seconds of Heretics and Killers might have been the greatest thing I've ever heard live. Each separate pause, drop, etc was SO impactful! It blew me away. I'm still not certain I have ever recovered?

That all being said, Rody has been an entertainer the whole time. He may not be a hyper lunatic on stage anymore. But he still does these weird, improv stand-up routines during breaks in the show, and that's always been a blast.

With that said, the 10 year fortress show was incredible and I hope we get a 10 year Scurrilious show.

I love Scurrilous but no way in hell is it better than Fortress. I'd take it over Volition or Pacific Myth tho

Also here to echo the live show experience stuff - they were sloppy AF when I saw them tour Fortress in '08, but the Fortress 10 year tour was my favorite show of all time. Most improvement I've ever seen from a band's live show, granted they had a decade to figure that out

Y'all do know that they went on record saying that they wrote Fortress parts that they couldn't even play reliably live, right? They explicitly said they wrote beyond their capabilities to push themselves.

If we include Pacific Rim, then that's easily their worst. Otherwise I would say Volition is the easy pick. Scurry is just flat out underrated.

> Everything after Fortress for me is a thumbs down (except "C'est La Vie", I enjoy that).

Biggest call out is the writing (lyrics). Arif wrote the lyrics for Kezia + Fortress, the only song he wrote on Scurrilous was C'Est La Vie, Rody took over that duty from there. His bass work was also great, but I think I miss his lyrics the most.

Kezia is in my top albums of all time (Fortress is technically better in nearly every regard, but Kezia holds a very special place in my heart)
