Former AC/DC Drummer Chris Slade retires 2026-08-26 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 10 Comments | Veteran Welsh drummer Chris Slade has announced his retirement at the age of 79, bringing an extensive professional career of more than six decades to an end.
Slade explained that the effects of a minor stroke he suffered approximately seven years ago have worsened, leaving him unable to continue performing. Although he had hoped to remain active into his eighties, he acknowledged that his health would no longer permit it.
The drummer began his professional career at sixteen as a member of Tom Jones' backing band. He subsequently performed with Manfred Mann's Earth Band, David Gilmour, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep, Asia and Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers' supergroup The Firm.
Slade joined AC/DC in 1989 and appeared on 1990's The Razors Edge, which included "Thunderstruck." He remained with the Australian rock veterans until Phil Rudd returned in 1994, before rejoining them for the "Rock or Bust" touring cycle in 2015.
In 2012, Slade formed the Chris Slade Timeline to celebrate material from throughout his career. He thanked the group's members and everyone who attended their concerts, while assuring followers that occasional material will continue to appear through the band's social-media page.

It’s always sad to me when I read of someone being forced to give up music, but at least in this case he has a massive legacy. Hope his health improves.
