Olivia Rodrigo New Single 2026-08-25 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 3 Comments | Olivia Rodrigo has officially released her politically charged new single, Serena Joy, across streaming platforms.
The song initially appeared on August 21 as a limited CD edition of only 500 copies, available exclusively from Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California. The entire run sold out that same day.
Co-written by Rodrigo and longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, Serena Joy was recorded during the sessions for her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Rodrigo ultimately excluded it because its subject did not fit the album's relationship-centered narrative.
The title refers to Serena Joy Waterford, a central character in Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale. Through that connection, the song addresses political complicity, the erosion of women's rights and the danger of ignoring oppression until it reaches those who previously believed themselves protected.
A portion of the single's net proceeds will benefit the Daisy Chain Fields Fund, which supports organizations working on behalf of women and girls. Rodrigo is expected to give the song its live debut during her all-women Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine, California, on August 29.
