Mastodon cover Led Zeppelin

2019-04-15 by CugnoBrasso | 37 Comments
In a tribute to their recently deceased former manager Nick John, Mastodon decided to cover Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven".

The song is available on YouTube and has been pressed on vinyl for Record Store Day. Side B of the vinyl (Stairway to Nick John) features the same song performed live at John's funeral, recorded by Gojira's Joe Duplantier on his phone.

The band wrote, "In early September 2018, we lost one of our closest friends and our biggest fan, our manager Nick John. He was essentially the band’s Dad. From our highest highs to our lowest lows he was always there. Every single move we made went through him first as our trust in him was marrow deep. His favorite band besides us and Gojira, was Led Zeppelin. We were asked to perform “Stairway to Heaven” at his funeral. Afterward, finding out that someone had recorded it, we figured we should record a studio version and release it on Record Store Day as a tribute to Nick with all the proceeds to be donated to pancreatic cancer research. We would not be the band we are today without the help of Nick John. We miss him dearly and think of him always. We love you buddy."

AND OF COURSE THEY CHOOSE THEIR MOST POPULAR SONG.

God, how difficult it is for a band to choose a deep cut?. I mean, alice in chains covered rush's tears and that's not their most popular song in 2112.

bruh, how can you seriously complain they covered Stairway to Heaven when it was clearly a tribute to their friend and manager lol

Not trying to detract from how cool/nice this is but:

"Side B of the vinyl (Stairway to Nick John) features the same song performed live at John's funeral, recorded by Gojira's Joe Duplantier on his phone."

This video appeared in my YouTube recommendations yesterday, didn't know it was a recent cover and that it was a tribute to their manager.
Solid rendition.

^That doesn't sound like love OR acceptance. I should clarify I just think it's funny they're pressing a phone recording. The act itself is awesome and a nice tribute.

From what I recall, it was Nick Johns’ favorite song, so that’s why they did a cover for it.

Really loved that they did this but I wish the vocals weren't so processed the whole time.

And really? Bitching about covering Stairway? C'mon, it's not like this is Crazy Train or Sweet Child. This is a difficult song to cover and yet still keep that vibe of the original. Mastodon succeeded.

I picture Joe Duplantier recording Mastodon playing Stairway on his phone thinking to himself "fuck yeah this will make a great B side". Cool tribute.

Also, this isn't an official upload. This article needs to be taken down.

The audio is cut in several places, definitely not the best way to present this, otherwise beautiful cover. Brann absolutely killed it.

That's cos it's some random dude who uploaded it to youtube, not the band. This is, for now, a strictly physical release.
