Looks like I'll have a late arrival to my best of 2009 list.

"The album will feature one 50-minute song as well as a few shorter ones"
Saw that coming. Going to kick ass
| |
Def going to the Terminal 5 date.
| |
The only thing better than a Dream Theatre, Opeth, and Porcupine Tree package is if Nickleback opened.
| |
new album = cool
road runner = not cool
| |
They already signed with Roadrunner since FOABP. And they should have made that 50-min song into the album, no other tracks (a la Crimson).
| |
They were signed to Roadrunner in a few places but they were signed to Lava/Atlantic in the US. They are now exclusively signed to Roadrunner in all territories (except Japan).
| |
Whats wrong with Roadrunner? This can mean good promotion for PT in the states. I already got my tickets for the Club Nokia gig this Sept. This is gonna be one of the best albums in the year.
| |
all roadrunner cares about is money, that's what's wrong with them
| |
Who actually cares what label they're signed to? What's more important is that the music keeps on rockin'.
| |
^True.
But still Lava/Atlantic didn't give two shits about promoting PT. I think Roadrunner will at least promote them better than any label in the past (other than Kscope which does Steven Wilson and PT re-issues.) How are you so sure RR is all about the money? Because they have a few poppy bands on their label like Nickelback and Slipknot?
| |

That's pretty impressive, knowing the psychology of each individual Roadrunner Records emplpyee.
| |
Wilson won't let Roadrunner stop his way of doing things.
Exactly. Steven Wilson does what Steven Wilson wants.
| |

it's not exactly difficult to deduce, looking at the history of the label, how it has changed, how it has changed the artists it has signed, and how it has changed the type of artists that it signs.
| |
What record label doesn't care most about making money?
| |
How has it changed its artists? Most of them change on their own, even if they won't admit it in interviews. They see a label that will promote them and they want to make some money so they change on their own. Dream Theater and Opeth haven't gone commercial.
| |
Oh man yes Steve Wilson rules. Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" is my favorite epically long song at the moment, it'd be cool if this was even better.
| |
Roadrunner is turning itself to a pretty good label, to have three progressive juggernauts in Opeth, Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree.
| |
kinda sucks that the closest is chicago..seeing how that date is on the same day the album comes out which means i just gotta either rock that cd the whole way to chicago or i just wont know the new stuff

This.
| |
This is super!
| |
A 50 minute song?
So now the question is: will they play it live?
| |
new album = cool
road runner = not cool
This!
| |
album's better gonna be great, I already have tickets for a show in October.
tbh I don't really see what's the point of putting short songs on an album together with a 50 minute longtrack. but let's wait and see.
his latest three outputs (FoaBP, No-Man's Schoolyard Ghosts and the solo album), are all among Wilson's very best works so my expectations for this are really high :-)
| |

You've really gotta wait until you hear the album to say that...
| |
Eh... I love Porcupine Tree, but I'm not sure what I think about a 50 minute song.
| |
one 50 minute song? it better be fucking awesome.
| |
50 minutes? Damn, I hope I can pay attention that long.
| |
I'm not too thrilled about the 50 minute track, hopefully it will have clearly identifiable segments or even be broken up rather than trying to be one fairly cohesive song.

Fairly cohesive would be just fine.
| |
No way they could keep it interesting for that long.
| |
I hope its fairly cohesive, although it'd be nice if they broke it into separate gapless songs so we could go to different parts of the song. Maybe have separate "movements" like some bands do.
| |
I have no doubt that both their new album and their live show are going to be amazing.
| |
This will be incredible, I can't wait
| |
How are they live? I might go to the SF show.
| |
My friend says that because all of the vocal harmonies, studio harmonies, and quiet vocals are gone, their songs are transformed into really awesome hard rock.
| |
Word is that their tour mates, 3, have also been signed to Road Runner. Coincidentally (?) both of these band have been openings for and well received by Dream Theater. Either way, awesome news. If Road Runner can ever live down Nickelback, well be set.
| |
theywere already signed to roadrunner for ages in australia
| |
excellent, can't wait for the new album
| |
Good news, but I am definitely not sold on the 50-minute song.
| |
SW has described it as a 50 minute 'song cycle' rather than one long song. So I think it will be more like 6DOIT in that it will be one song but it will also have identifiable 'movements' or 'sections' in it.
| |
if it's as epic as 21st century breakdown i am certainly down
| |
on a side note i've never really dug these guys, or progressive rock in general. but I plan to amend that
| |
One of my favorite bands signing to my favorite label, awesome.
| |
Skeptical about the 50-minute song but I think it will turn out great
| |
Roadrunner is officially the best label ever.
| |
Only just started getting into PT , 50 min song sounds very interesting.
| |
Porcupine Tree>(Dream Theater x Opeth)squared
