Buddy Holly: 50 Years Later

2009-02-03 by Tyler EMERITUS | 9 Comments
Today marks 50 years since Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P "the Big Bopper" Richardson died in a snowy plane crash.

To commemorate Holly’s short but influential career, Geffen Records is releasing a three-CD, 60-song Memorial Collection of digitally remastered, undubbed recordings of Holly with original duo partner Bob Montgomery and backing band and collaborators, The Crickets.

Geffen has also released a two-CD, 59 song collection of Holly rarities, b-sides and alternate takes.

Both Down The Line - Rarities and the Best Buy Exclusive Memorial Collection hit shelves on January 27th.

February 3rd, 1959 was once known as "the day music died". 50 years later, music is certainly not dead. In this case it's true what they say: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Buddy Holly's death shocked the world, but like his music it was in many ways a catalyst for creative output.

Buddy Holly influenced so many bands in the short time that he was a musician. RIP.

Not only was his influence important, but when he died there was a void in music. Elvis was in the Army, Chuck Berry was in jail, Little Richard became a preacher, and Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin. All of these events allowed an opening for new acts to rise from America (Roy Orbison & The Beach Boys) and the British Invasion (The Beatles & The Rolling Stones). This Message Edited On 02.03.09

On this day, we in Lubbock, TX remember to honor the loss of the city's only claim to fame (other than TTU).This Message Edited On 02.03.09
