Coldplay:We ripped off Buckley

2008-12-20 by Iai EMERITUS | 41 Comments
One thing you have to give Chris Martin credit for: he's got a pretty good sense of humour about his negative publicity.

The man who once responded to criticisms that he was too miserable by telling a journalist 'you would be too if you had to live up to Thom Yorke and Brad Pitt' (score!) admitted on BBC Radio 1 that yes, he is guilty of ripping someone off. It just so happens that the person he ripped off is actually famous, actually wrote good songs, and actually had a full head of hair.

"[Shiver was] a blatant Jeff Buckley attempt," he told Moyles. "Not quite as good, that's what I think. We were 21 and he was very much a hero, and as with those things it tends to filter through."

The admission is two-fold, of course - not only was Martin slying sticking the boot into Satriani, but one also expects that he was throwing his weight behind the ongoing campaign to get Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" to the top of the UK's Christmas singles charts, ahead of the version released by X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

What is it with the English charts having re-releases go top 5 year after year? It was Elvis a couple of years back & there has been more that I can't recall off the top of my head right now.

everyone surely knows that most of the british pop rock bands in the last 10 years have to some extent tried to emulate jeff buckley or used him for inspiration. muse, radiohead, coldplay, starsailor... keane? etc.

he's an inspiring dude.

Curse.

obviously not; it's called a joke.

Martin has started joking at gigs when they play an acoustic song or 2 in the stands that Green Eyes was 'written by Joe Satriani, as are most of our songs', and telling people to sing along to Yellow because 'we've only got 2 hit songs, and one of them is about to be taken away by some guitarist'.

Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah ain't half bad, but it's no where near as good as Jeff Buckley's. Mind you, that'd be pretty much impossible.

satriani isn't as famous as a lot of you guys think he is, if you don't play guitar you have no reason to have heard of him (for the most part)

satriani isn't covered on american idol or anything, and his albums don't go #1.

i do really enjoy chris martins humor about all of this

i really don't know anyone who just listens to satriani thats not a guitar player, not gonna lie. not that they're not out there. i mean yeah he's famous but comparatively i'm sure coldplay have more fans cause theres more fags in the world that listen to coldplay than there are people who care about satch.

dude chris is hilarious.

on the front of the rolling stone i believe it said a quote from Martin saying "we owe our career to radiohead."
and when they were on the tv show called "the hour" they listed off all the songs on a Rush Of Blood To The Head and who they tried to ripoff.

Jeff Buckley is a genious, Slipknot's last cd was great but not good enough to make stupid comments.
And whoever still hates Coldplay after Viva La Vida should not be on this site.

I don't even like Coldplay, but I have to give them credit. They certainly know how to spin a situation to their advantage.

And the guitarists here pretending that Satch is this giant name in pop culture really is loltastic.

"And the guitarists here pretending that Satch is this giant name in pop culture really is loltastic."

Hah, I know, right?

Almost as bad as the number of people who call all Coldplay fans "fags". I'd rather listen to them any day than some crappy '80s hair metal guitar wankery. "Oh, but he's so TECHNICALLY sound!" Oh, Satch, still nobody knows who you are, and nobody cares.

And I laugh at the amount of people who think, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT, that Coldplay took that song from Satriani. Coldplay have always owned up to their influences and seem like perfectly nice guys, so wouldn't it be a bit out-of-character to do that? I think the fact that they're joking about it shows how silly they think it is. Of course, it absolutely CAN'T BE POSSIBLE THAT OUT OF ALL THE MUSIC ON THE PLANET, TWO SONGS SOUND VERY MUCH ALIKE.

It's in any case borderline hilarious that Coldplay are joking about ripping off any artist whatsoever as they have never managed to develop a sound of their own, but instead sound like influence x, influence y etc.. in turns.

Doubtful that there's any case of plagiarism here, but Coldplay needs to break up already. They're a band nobody will remember in 15 years time.

Do our members actually think the only way someone would've heard of Satch is by being a guitar player? Really surprised by that series of statements, its pretty clear that's far from the truth. And low and behold, I don't play guitar and I know who the man is...and yes, listens to his music for the sake of listening! What a concept eh..Coldplay is fucking useless, and this is a pretty biased write up for an article posting.

And good point Zuzek, plagerism or not, Coldplay will not be a memorable band when their moment in the sun is over.

I agree. They've only been selling millions for like ten years now. After another five full of success I'll bet no one will ever remember.

They sold some records, good for them. I'm not denying the current success of Coldplay because I'm not a moron. I'm also not a seer of any kind and can't see the future. This just wouldn't be the first band to be commercially successful but lacking in anything really strong musically. This Message Edited On 12.22.08
