Korn guitarist goes solo

2008-03-05 by Thor | 31 Comments
KoRn guitarist James ‘Munky’ Shaffer announced today plans to release a new project entitled Fear and the Nervous System due out August 8. The record will be released on his own label, Emotional Syphon Records.

The band features:

James Christian Shaffer (“Munky”), guitars and vocals
Billy Gould (Faith No More), bass
Wes Borland (Black Light Burns, Limp Bizkit), guitars
Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion, Tenacious D), drums and percussion
Leopold Ross, programming and guitars
Zach Baird, keyboards and programming

The album will be produced by Shaffer, Ross, and Jim Monti, with additional production by Tim Harkins, Leopold Ross and Danny Lohner of NINE INCH NAILS.

Famed producer Ross Robinson (Slipknot, KoRn) comments: “What can I do to ever come close to feeling James’s level of pure ruthless courage through a guitar? Since I’ve worked with him, I’ve tried to inspire, convince, beg, bleed, cry, prod and nearly die, hoping to hit that bar with others. I’m grateful to know what ‘it’ is, and where it always exists—in my brother, James. His solo band? Yes, please!”

The songs are being recorded at Music Grinder Studios in Hollywood , CA , with Jim Monti handling the mixing duties.

Ross Robinson has lost his mind.
This sounds extremely uninteresting. He is a boring guitarist.

i don't know what to think since all i know of munky is within the context of korn.

i kind of knew everyone was going to say he sucks. but how do we really know what he plays if we have only really heard him do korn all this time.

how someone plays in a band is not always how they play in general.

Yeah, but it's probably a good indication of what's in store for this album.

John 5 would be a good example of a guitarist leaving a more or less washed up and/or musically uninteresting band - and surprising everyone with his solo material.

Not that I hate Manson's music, it's just on a more basic level than the stuff John 5 put out in his own name.

hmmm depending on his singing voice, this could be interesting. wes is a pretty good guitarist (never really gets the credit for it thought), and the presence of the sheer awesomeness that is billy gould and brooks wackerman bodes well...

Yeah definitely just trying to make money off his name. Munkey is a God awful guitarist. I seen some stuff of him just jamming and it sounds and looks like a train wreck in an airplane crash.
So the drummer from Korn is the only one that hasn't gone solo, right? And he happens to be the most talented one out of the bunch.
Yes, hurray for getting Billy Gould, but Wes Borland sucks. Admit it. He has never done anything that has made me respect him as a guitarist. And he is generally an overrated guitarist. I would say that he doesn't get credit, he really doesn't deserve much. This Message Edited On 03.06.08This Message Edited On 03.06.08

This news is very exciting for me. With any luck, Korn will finally break up, and NEVER, EVER, produce music again. Quite possibly the worst band the world has ever seen.

I'm not even gonna try judging this yet because I'm not sure to say good idea or horrible solo idea and outcome. But I like korn so I don't know.
