Eh... Chorus kinda grew on me after a bit, but it's a pretty mid and generic song. Way prefer Sub Orbital Blues to this one.

oof ye boring djeneric, they'll probably get way more popular now. Sub-Orbital was def the superior track.

Edit: Oh my god these lyrics lmfao. Andy's clean parts are gonna be the only thing saving this album and it's a massive waste of his talent to be in this band, ouch.

Yeah this was not good, and this is coming from someone who actually enjoyed The Work, as much of a mess as that album was.

Growling “baby” in a lyric like it’s a Justin Timberlake verse is kinda cringe (I’m old and don’t follow pop so I don’t have a better reference). I miss Owls era RoN, man…

I think they're trying to be more edgy and brutal maybe? I really liked the song and the new vox are great. The previous single was cool too and gave me some random Scar Symmetry vibes. Am hyped for the album, especially if there are longer prog-ier tracks. I'm noticing a suspicious lack of sax on these songs however

i actually don't mind this. the production is a little sterile, but otherwise all fine.

and let's not pretend like they were grand poets before, the lyrics are their usual semi-mytho nonsense

Band was always kind of mid for me but with enough moments of greatness/nice shit that grabbed my ear/enjoyable enough for me to listen to once in a while. This is some doodooass shit with some nice clean singing melodies slapped onto it. And GOD those lyrics lmao. Maybe not grand poets but I barely even notice lyrics usually and these had me physically cringing.

Noped out about 2 minutes in and I think I'm permanently good. Seems like they ejected almost everything enjoyable about their previous records and just defaulted to high-end cringe deathcore, and that is absolutely incredibly disappointing.

Oh wow. This is really, really bad. I can't believe they're even using the RoN name anymore. Can you believe the crisp, enunciated shrieks of "babies", rhymed with "crazy"? I cannot. I simple must have imagined that.

Musically this is not memorable at all either. The clean "chorus" isn't memorable, melodic, or well written. This is basically a different band at this point. Jake MADE RoN. Now it's another forgettable run of the mill paint by numbers metal band without personality and without an "it" factor to make them stand out. I can't believe some of these same dudes wrote Owls man.

I kind of feel like this band has run its course. Sure Owls is a near masterpiece but has anything else in their catalog even come close? Now it seems downhill from here

Yet another band so "progressive" they've become regressive. Most modern prog offers little more compositional intrigue than generic deathcore. We've come full circle.

This is giving off Big Fallujah-After-Alex Hofmann-Quit Vibes. In terms of the sharp veer in style and quality. At least those guys bounced back with the last album. That remains to be seen with RoN.

Surprised at the sheer amount of hate this is getting. Instrumentally, I think it sounds alright. I think both singles have been a step up from most of The Work.

I haven't looked at the lyrics for this new one yet but I'm kinda scared to now lol

So I looked up the lyrics, a bit cringe yea... BUT:

Vocalist and bassist Adam Biggs had this to say about the latest single:
“‘Hellbirds’ is a song that was actually largely written during the sessions for The Work. We couldn’t find a place for the song on that album, but we knew it would see the light of day sometime because it’s easily one of the heaviest songs we’ve ever written, and we’ve reworked it to display the raw power of the new lineup. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone you might consider a ‘typical’ person in this day and age; worn out, drug addicted, nihilistic and living in the wake of so many things he can’t control. It’s an anthem for people who hail from dead end towns like us.”

So I can sort of see what they were trying to do

This song isn’t bad. In light of what metalphil posted I guess I can give the lyrics a pass if this is a one-off thing. I do feel like the style of the band sounds much different with the new vocals. I much prefer Jake. Still highly interested to hear the next album.

Jake is definitely very much missed, some of the most unique screams in metal. That said the vocals of the new line up aren't bad by any means. I'm a big fan of the cleans from the former Black Crown Initiate member.

The vocals are definitely good for what they are, I just don’t personally prefer the more brutal growls as the dominant vocal style in this band. I guess I’m just spoiled from Jake’s tenure with the band. But I’m just nitpicking. The vocals definitely aren’t/wont make or break the band for me. They aren’t bad.

The lyrics aren’t SUPPOSED to be bad, they’re supposed to be from a specific point of view, one the band even says they identify with.

And the issues with him saying “baby” and phrasing things weirdly are also present in the other single. “I got them sub orbital blues”, etc.

Yea from an instrumental perspective I think it's pretty good? I don't think the lyrics are as bad as most seem to think, especially knowing it's supposed to be written from a specific point of view.

I'll take both these new singles any day over the first couple singles from The Work

Dang, the opening comments about the lyrics were WAY more negative than I expected haha.

I'm not going to argue that the music or lyrics are objectively good, but here's why the lyrics worked for me: It's a perfect story of a self-destructive, doomed person who's also a huge asshole, as portrayed in the music video. I would say I'm very kind to people, but as someone with self-destructive tendencies, the nihilistic messaging makes a lot of sense for this character. The Youtube description of this story makes a lot of sense for struggling parts of the modern-day Midwest and South
