McCoy Tyner dies aged 81

Revered Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner has died at the age of 81 on March 6, 2020.

The news was revealed by his nephew Colby. No other details were provided at time of writing.

Though he had a staggeringly diverse cadre of a solo career evidencing a versatility that made him as comfortable on a Cool Jazz album as he was on a Free one, he is perhaps best known for being the pianist for John Coltrane's most incendiary work.

He began playing at the age of 13 and started working professionally at 16, joining the Coltrane quintet at 21.

He left the group in 1965 and worked on a number of other albums, many under his own name. The official account for Blue Note Records tweeted “a titan” has now been lost and that the “amount of beauty” Tyner gave to the world is “staggering".

To quote the official statement of the family, "McCoy Tyner’s music and legacy will continue to inspire fans and future talent for generations to come."

Still torn up about this one. He was one of jazz's most underrated figures relative to the giants who he played along with, a personal hero, and his playing was consistently stunning throughout his career. RIP Tyner, and hopefully the classic Coltrane Quartet is already fully reunited somewhere out there playing their hearts out.

I read that as Corey Taylor for a few millisecond and I already popped the champagne
