The Death of SLAYER?

2007-08-07 by The Sludge | 39 Comments
It may be a bonified satanic armageddon sometime in the near future as one of the pioneers of Thrash, Slayer's frontman Tom Araya, numbers the days that the next album maybe their last. Oh, and discusses opening for Marilyn Manson in this interview with Worcester Magazine.

Quote:
History has shown those who precede Slayer don't have an easy time of it, as rabid fans have been known to chant the band's name throughout entire sets of opening acts. While on one hand it will be a blessing for Marilyn Manson that Araya and company will go on first each and every night, following a performance by the most potent live band in metal's history isn't going to be a cakewalk.

"A lot of bands opt for us closing, but there have been a few that wanted to close, like the Slipknot tour we did in 2004," Araya says. "We always look at the opening spot as a prime-time spot, you know what I mean? Everybody's there for prime time, which is 8 or 9 o'clock. We have no qualms as far as opening for anybody, because that means that they have to follow." Araya continues, confidently declaring, "I don't want to sound big-headed, but to us, that's considered signing your death warrant. I think that Manson's got his work cut out for him."

The 46-year-old singer/bassist does admit after spending more than half of his life entrenched within a band as aggressive as Slayer, that the end of the road may loom on the horizon. "Well, there have been remarks made about seeing an old man head-bang," laughs Araya. "And I have to agree. I think the Stones can do that, probably go out and do their stuff in their 80s, but it just wouldn't look right for us, you know what I mean?

"It's actually pretty strenuous," he continues, "that's why I don't see it going any further than a certain point in time. We have one more record to do, which is our deal with Rick Rubin, and we'll have to sit down and discuss the future. But I can't really see myself doing this at a later age."

Wow.

It would be weird knowing Slayer weren't around anymore. But hey, Araya has his head screwed on at least.

Araya is a smart man and i think he has a point. It will be sad when they do quit but i hope they can hold on for a few more years.

Metallica should take notice. Sometimes its time to give up the ghost and let your legacy stand rather than shit all over it.

I feel bad for Slayer having to open for MM and not vice versa. Hell, I feel bad that they have to tour with MM in the first place. This Message Edited On 08.07.07

I'm seeing that tour in a week. Being a fan of both i don't hate Slayer for touring with MM. I think it was much worse with Iron Maiden touring with Bullet for My Valentine and Trivium in diferent occassions.

Just as it seems. Slayer were in their prime before the eh God Hates Us All. I dont like Manson, anyways. It seems like a waste to have a great band like Slayer open for such a shit star.

Well, also think. Do we really want Slayer to drag on and on forever? I mean, look at Ozzy. If Slayer turned into that kind of thing, I'd lose respect.

I guess what Araya's getting at, is that they should stop while their still ahead of the game.

But then...SLAYER IS FUCKING IMMORTAL!!!!!

I can't wait to see them next week live near Sacramento. I'm still gonna be drunkenly screaming Slayer halfway through Manson's set. Maybe bring tomatoes?

I just saw slayer in NJ with manson and bleeding through. It went like this maybe 2 or 3 people stood up for bleeding through, the entire ampitheater shook to the foundation for slayer and then was empty for manson. Manson is such an ego maniac he had to close and he paid the price. No exaggeration thousands made a b-line for the door after slayer leaving only a handful of make-up wearing little kids. I almost felt bad for manson, but serves him right

No! I love slayer. But I saw this coming since they have been around for a while. But they will always be remmembered as a very infulential band. And I bet there will be a reunion tour some day.
