The King of Surf Rock has died. Few musicians were so influential in the early years of rock music.

In an interview from 2015 he talked about his long-term struggle with cancer, funding his medical expenses by touring all through his 70s.

Quote:
"When I met Leo Fender and he created the Stratocaster guitar, he wanted me to pioneer it, proof it, and help take all the bugs out of it. Everything that came out of Leo Fender's head, I was his test pilot. He used to say, "When it can withstand the barrage of punishment from Dick Dale, then it is fit for the human consumption." So I blew up over 50 amplifiers. And that's why they call me the Father of Heavy Metal. Because I use 60-gauge strings and I make people's ears bleed."

Absolute legend, his work was so far ahead of it's time. The god of surf guitar. Wish I could have caught him live.

RIP. Sound was so far ahead of most of his peers. One of the best of his era.

If that's true it doesn't surprise me. He didn't seem incredibly happy to be there when I saw him a few years ago

sad that a man so influential had to struggle for money like that in his later years. RIP.

weird to learn also that his son was an original drummer for Forever Came Calling.
