2018-08-02 by Voltimand | 42 Comments
English progressive rock/metal band Haken have announced a new studio album titled 'Vector', set to release October 26th this year. Produced by the band themselves, the album was recorded and mixed by Adam "Nolly" Getgood who has worked with other acts such as Periphery, Devin Townsend and Sikth. It is their fifth studio album, following 2016's 'Affinity'.

Tracklist:

1. Clear
2. The Good Doctor
3. Puzzle Box
4. Veil
5. Nil By Mouth
6. Host
7. A Cell Divides

To celebrate the announcement, Haken is running an art contest for fans to submit their own Rorschach ink blots, with the winning print selected by the band to be etched into every vinyl copy of the record. Additional details are in their video, here:

Would rather have Vektor announce a new album called Haken but oh well

I swear the first time I saw the headliner I thought it was a news article about a Vektor album.

I seriously doubt there'll be a new Vektor album this year though :S

From what I understand, 3/4 or Vektor left the band, but Eric (I think that’s his name) is working on new stuff. No word on whether it’ll be solo or if he’s got a new group of musicians

He only mixed it, it seems, which is good because his production fucking sucks. He has no idea what to emphasize in a mix and it comes out super confused. The new Sikth was aggravating to listen to.

On related terms, new Haken is always a treat. Wasn't as stoked on the last one, but I'm willing to bet this'll see them experimenting more sonically.

Yea, vanilla ice cream is delicious. Also when I think of "bleh" I think of Sam Carters screams, haha.

Some interesting info on their website:

"Their fifth studio record sees the band going in a heavier direction with the music."

Guitarist Charlie Griffiths explains
"We’ve always had a heavy influence, but it was obvious from the riffs that were naturally coming out of us early in the writing process that this would be a more metal album. These are some of the most riff driven songs we’ve ever written."

Was pretty let down by "affinity" and I think "The Mountain" is pretty overhyped. Got high hopes for this one if they are indeed going for a heavier approach this time.

The only Haken news worth reading is, "Haken break up, suddenly and bitterly."

I'm not much into this band tbh, but The Mountain was praised pretty heavily. Yea, bands get more popular and people start to shit on them. And often I'm not better about this than anyone else haha

Looking forward to this. Affinity was a bit tame in parts, (though still great) but I'm looking forward to a potentially heavier album

Affinity was great but nowhere near as good as The Mountain.
I'm excited for this album to be like 70 minutes.

Affinity was one of the best albums of its year, and it really benefited from the heavy sections. Really hoping this turns out awesome.

hm, hope it's good, but considering Affinity did not live up to the hype, I'm not gonna hold my breath. The problem is Haken's vocalist isn't very metal. They were always heavy, but the soft Yes/Gentle Giant parts are what make the sound cohesive.

TundraL5Z:

Honestly when i think of Haken, i think "bleh", if they where an ice cream, they'd be a vanilla with 20% of the regular taste

What kind of ice cream do you eat? Like vanilla cause they aren't heavy enough for you or vanilla cause they're boring?

Also why do you give a band's albums who you are trying to say are boring 4's?

This band always has struck me as par for this kind of prog. Some memorable moments, some downright unnecessary or annoying. Vocals are pretty weak ill say. Even the effective moments are merely average. They're all individually talented enough that i hold out hope that they'll improve. I mean, I prefer Caligula's Horse which really says more about Haken than Caligula's Horse...
