They are the same thing, same kids at concerts from the scene, same tattooed losers, same kids I used to see at metalcore bands, same rly emotional young kids who the pop punk bands "rly mean a lot" to.
They may sound different from your idea of what most scene bands sound like, its the same thing. Some make scumbag hardcore, some make 2008 podfarm-core, some make depressing pop-punk and other make unironic emo revival.

Then after a while the kids that were once neon scene grew up and got over that shit and wanted to make 'real music'
It was then that the scene started taking itself more seriously as a whole, neon was out and grey, boring lyrics about white suburbia were in. The Wonder Years are a great example. Compare their earlier stuff to the edgy, pretentious stuff they play now.
Yes, the neon scene thing is still around but it's like looking at a relic. Scene hipsters are just tr00 kids, same kids but taking themselves more serious.
We have them by the bucketful here via Melbourne being the hipster capital of Aus.

Hipsters that try to dress like lads/station rats. The list goes on dude.

Even if they agree with what he did or don't mind it doesn't serve them well to have him in the band since this has gotten some notoriety and their band will be known for it and associated with it and overshadow the music. It might anyways even with him gone. From a business perspective it makes sense.
