Alcest unveil Kodama

2016-07-26 by bnelso55 | 74 Comments
French blackgaze forerunners Alcest will release, Kodama, on September 30, 2016 by way of Prophecy Productions. Their 5th album sees the duo fusing the extreme elements of their earlier releases with forays into new musical territories.

In addition to drawing influence from The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr, Grimes and The Cure, the 6-song collection recalls the undulating grandeur of the band's esteemed 2010 offering, Écailles De Lune and is billed as the band’s “Japanese album”, gleaning inspiration from and paying tribute to Hayao Miyazaki's film "Princess Mononoke" and the illustrations of Takato Yamamoto.

The album will be available in standard CD and LP editions as well as special, deluxe 2CD, 3LP and 4LP versions.

Tracklist:
1. Kodama
2. Eclosion
3. Je Suis D'ailleurs
4. Untouched
5. Oiseaux De Proie
6. Onyx

Very excited to hear this. Shelter was enjoyable but I prefer their more black metal sound of Écailles De Lune.

Artwork looks like it could be for a Baroness album, or some other stoner/doom/sludge band. Interested in what this will sound like considering those influences are pretty different as far as Alcest goes.

English Song Titles:

1. Kodama
2. Outbreak
3. I Am Moreover
4. Untouched
5. Birds of Prey
6. Onyx

Ran this through Google, might be rough or direct translations. I know 3., Je Suis D'ailleurs, is a short story by Lovecraft originally titled The Outsider, but I don't speak French, so...sorry?

Ecailles and Voyages are their best, so if this follows that style even a little then it'll be amazing.

The debut and Voyages are tied for my second favorite, they switch places for me depending on my mood. Shelter is their weakest but still excellent.

Eh the artwork is alright. Definitely well done. I think the girl on the cover makes it seem a bit tacky/corny. That's just not my style I guess. Makes me think of some cheesy Japanese anime.

I loved Shelter, in fact I have just picked up a vinyl copy of it a week ago. Can't wait to see him for the first time in December, sadly he doesn't come around often to Budapest. I'll have to watch Mononoke first though to truly shoegaze to this album.

With Ecailles as a base it should be good but with those influences it's up in the air how it's gonna sound. Alternative progressive post-gothic blackened dream grunge?

Jealous of your vinyl. Mononoke is dope. I hope this album is an incarnation of the demon boar.

Im almost certain this is gonna fail, mostly in part to how eclectic its supposed influences are. Mixing that much stuff will only result in a mess imo. However, im still oddly intrigued...

Shelter has its place. They tried doing something a little different, more lighter sounding while still retaining their dreamlike atmosphere and they pulled it off well. Glad to hear this won't be Shelter pt II.

Shelter is my least favorite Alcest lp, but it's still excellent. it's just that kind of thing that works only once and gets boring the second time. that's why this is such good news.

To be fair guys, some of these influences might not be stylistic. Steven Wilson credits Cardiacs as an ideological/spiritual influence on how he wants to make music, even if they're not the same style.
