Melbourne heavyweights get raw

Australian band Ordnance should possibly have released more material by now. Given their demanding musical style and constant problem with drummers however, it's easy to see why their debut album "Echelon" took 2 years to record and release.

4 drummers have passed through their roster since their inception in 2011 - the last quitting just weeks into the recording sessions for "Echelon". According to songwriter/guitarist Michael Coffey, "We looked around and advertised for a long time but just couldn't find anyone that would commit to play the material, - we even considered approaching someone like Dave Haley (Psycroptic) or Rob Brens (Hadal Maw/Alarum/King Parrot) to complete the album but we wanted someone more permanent. We eventually went with programmed drums because we wanted it a certain way. To finish it and get it out there is great as we can keep looking for a drummer and keep writing".

Engineered by Jesse Oberin (Internal Harvest/Shoal) in his home studio and mixed and mastered by Adam Calaitzis at Toyland Studio, the 10 tracks on "Echelon" are certainly raw and human. For all it's humble origins, the album is punishing yet dynamic, blunt but melodic. With lyrics that compliment the musics complexity, the album ranges from cosmic horror through to science fiction and hopelessness.

"We generally like to try and do as much as we can by ourselves, from recording, to artwork to final publishing" says vocalist and album artwork designer Justin Daley. "Playing metal is funny because there's this perception in the community that it's this real tight knit thing where there's a lot of support but that's not true at all - you're on your own, so just go with it and make your own way".

For all their ethos, the band certainly hasn't compromised on it's vision for the album. Releasing "Echelon" in a beautifully rendered gate-fold digipak with an 8 page lyrics book, Ordnance have proven that huge financial backing is no longer vital to releasing quality material. "You've got to treat it all with the same level of respect, you've got to run that thread through your work and make it the best you can or why bother at all" Daley muses.
Ordnance have very recently secured the drumming services of newcomer William Troiani in order to tour the album.

"Echelon" is available now through their bandcamp and is also streaming on youtube.

A couple of minor grammar issues/typos, but an otherwise great write-up! Good to see people's news updates becoming a bit more substantial. I'm not too knowledgeable of the genre, but this sounds sweet.
