A Threat to Legal Guitar Tab? 2007-05-08 by WishMaster | 14 Comments | In late March, Musicnotes announced an agreement with the Harry Fox Agency to help license guitar and drum tabs for the website www.mxtabs.net. Over the past two weeks Musicnotes and MXTabs have received many phone calls from music publishers who received an e-mail communication from Hal Leonard Corporation (the world’s largest songbook publisher), outlining perceived problems with this new opportunity.
In this e-mail to music publishers, Hal Leonard Corporation questions the rationale behind Musicnotes’ online guitar tab licensing proposal. The e-mail includes a number of factual errors we need to address and was potentially very damaging to the work Musicnotes is doing for the writer and publisher community, and for their new company as well. The communication also misses the basic business point of the proposal: MXTabs.net aims to be a consumer-friendly site that generates meaningful incremental revenues for publishers and the songwriters they represent.
MXTabs has posted a copy of the original letter from Hal Leonard, including responses to the misinformation and factual errors. The response will hopefully help alleviate any concerns music publishers, artists, and the guitar tab community may have regarding MXTabs. Again, we believe there is a significant opportunity at hand that will both delight tab consumers and reward music creators.
The original letter was quite lengthy, but for those of you who prefer the extremely short version, the key points are:
- MXTabs will be a fully authorized and legal guitar and drum tab web site.
- MXTabs is an advertising-supported business model, much like radio and television.
- All publisher approval rights, including territorial limitations will be honored.
- The tablature community is underserved by the traditional print music industry. The vast majority (over 80%) of tablatures do not exist in any legal alternative format.

Yes! I'm so happy MxTabs is coming back. I remember when they went offline...twas a sad day.
| | | Great news on the return of good quality tabs again, though reading this statement..
- All publisher approval rights, including territorial limitations will be honored.
..does leave me a little wary. If a tab is not available outside of the US, will non US users have restrictions on tabs they can view? A similar situation is already going on within the video games online content, I hope its not going to lead to a similar rift
| | | Regarding the territory restrictions, this is the case - although many licenses are already in place to allow content to be displayed throughout the world. Expect news on what publishers and songwriters are already signed on to the project very soon - it's looking good so far.
| | | thank god its re-opening, ultimate guitar tabs was a right pain in the ass to use.
| | | I used to love Mx Tabs... then I got guitarpro software. Seriously makes mxtabs look like it came from the stone age.
| | | I was so sad when mxtabs got shut down I cried almost then it came back and I was happy and then it left again was once again sad i hope it stays this time.
| | | yayyyy
| | | I knew about the mxtabs return, but this amplifies my joy for it.
Ultimate-Gaytar can suck it.

Musicnotes has been selling digital sheet music online for nearly ten years. Not all of our licenses give rights to sell the music on a worldwide basis. We understand copyright law, and already have a system in place that will restrict displays of tablatures only to the territories for which they are authorized to be displayed.
This bit doesn't sound too great. It could lead to alot of pissed off people.
| | | That's nice to hear. I hate this whole "lawsuits against tab sites" thing. Goddamn greedy fucking music industry bastards!
| | | Woooooooooooo!
| | | To all of you who are super-excited... I think you're missing the pont here. Hal Leonard Corporation is purposefully spreading misinformation to the music publishers who hold the copyrights urging them NOT to allow their music to be allowed on MXTabs.
| | | Yeah, that's the problem. Hal Leonard is trying to stop publishers from working with MXTabs so they can print books instead.

Hal Leonard is trying to stop publishers from working with MXTabs so they can print books instead. I don't think anyone anywhere would want to pay over $20 on a book of tabs.
