^This, haha. My album of the year. But that song fucking sucks because of the guest spot. Such a mood ruiner. Also, that breakdown is tight. Annoying to me that it gets wasted on a song I'll never listen to. Wide-Eyed is the only bad song on the album. My Endnote is just okay too. Other than that, shit fucking crushes.

It's interesting how divisive people have been over "Wide Eyed". Everyone seems to love it and hate it in equal measure. I think the guest spot is super cool, but I see where the criticism is coming from. I still applaud them for taking such a risk, few bands in this genre rarely do.

I've listened to the album basically nonstop and it just gets better. Its hardcore - lyrics are the focal point, and they hit perfect.

"Phoenix Flame feels like the cheesiest thing ever,"
"More often than not, you're gonna feel alone, its a long fall from the top, can you stand it?" Those are like the most perfect lyrics speaking to youth in my opinion.

And just personally, I always hate the cheesy argument. I don't think the Ghost Inside is concerned whether or not their music is cheesy - I think they're more concerned about whether it hits the core which that song certainly does for me. The Princess Bride is cheesy as fuck, but its also incredible, and that's exactly what its trying to be.

And I'm not hating, pit. Just poking fun at you; I know you can take a joke or two. Honestly TGI has always been a hardcore band at heart. No matter how accessible or big they get, Vigil is always going to be that genuine kind of guy that I can respect. Get What You Give really didn't hit me the same way that their other albums did, but this one is shaping up alright.

Intothepit
November 6th 2014
4460 Comments

Teen angst doesn't necessarily mean they're singing about girlfriends and parents. It's that feeling of self-loathing that they seem to put out there and with brief moments of hopefulness, which isn't what traditonal hardcore is about. TGI have always strived to be respected and taken as a traditional hardcore bands, albeit much heavier than their predecessors, but they've never had the lyrical themes to take them seriously as one. It also doesn't help that each song on each album just blends in with the next. In fact, you really can't decipher sonically which album is which unless you're a truly religious TGI fan.

@intothepit,
1) To say just because you're past something that you shouldn't be singing about it is ridiculous. When a 50 year old sings about love from his teenage years, is he being childish? No, he's being mature and appreciating something even though it is no longer in his present time. It has left resonating effects, much like the misery of self-reflection and angst that are still very viable and interesting concepts to sing about. Our teenage into young adult time period of our life is the most central to our growth as human beings and to who we become as people. To shun this aside simply by taking that stupid elitist "move past that" sounds like someone who's insecure about it.

2) Just because they're 30 doesn't mean they've completely outgrown the demons that plagued them in their teenage years. I truly believe that some of the strongest human beings never leave a lot of their childhood behind because they're strong enough to handle the emotions and passion of those early years even when the world's stress becomes too hard for most adults to handle, which is why we learn to simplify things to just the things that are controllable and manageable for us. If someone can retain their childhood spirit and still be a contributing, good member of society, that's remarkable.

3) I don't know who you are, but you wrote on my wall probably just because you don't like my taste in music "go jump off a cliff, please." You're not a grown up - or maybe I should rephrase - you are a grown up, who acts worse than a child in a lot of ways. This whole thread shows a disgusting portrayal of your personality that I do not believe is the truth. But I hope someday you get by your own insecurity that has you telling Betray to take the knife away from his wrists. And I'd suggest one way of doing that might be to listen to TGI seriously and realize that a lot of us have demons from our past and childhood that are hard to face, and most of us choose to forget rather than progress and convince ourselves we are past those "childish" things rather than mustering up the balls to confront those problems so we can truly become better people.

MegaJake1024
November 7th 2014
827 Comments

And before you talk about how insecure or butthurt or whatever you want to say, that's totally fine. This does bother me. I always dislike it when another member of the human race conducts himself in this way, especially on a thread for something that I'm truly passionate about. And I have no shame that I took the seven minutes to type out that lengthy response. Its something I value in my own personality and I wish more people had the confidence to endure people who are going to make fun of them for it.

Also even if they are past their childhood issues, reflecting on them with maturity can be very helpful to the people who are actually going through it. So its still an awesome thing to do.

Both bands have REALLY stepped up their game this year though.

"How are those different genres, game? Both bands are mainly metalcore."

I consider TIJ metalcore and TGI melodic hardcore. These days the two are getting hard to separate, especially in the case of TGI and FTFD. Usually the difference for me is the vocals being more mid ranged or yelled, and the riffs being more simplistic with lots of melodic guitar leads over the top. That defining melodic hardcore.

And yeah i kinda think lyrics are a big vocal point of melodic hardcore, not so much in metalcore.

You're not giving genres any grey area. It's harder to do so with the music and instrumentation itself, but you can't define s genre by vocals. Sure, some genres have certain vocal characteristics, but I've heard vocals you normally hear from one genre in others.

Yeah I feel ya on the vocal argument pit. TGI's vocals are still pretty mid ranged which I associate with hardcore, rather than the high screams/low growls more dominant in metalcore. TGI is pretty similar to FTFD in that they kinda toe the line with metalcore but I'm pretty set on the idea that Counterparts is melodic hardcore. I'll give Verse and Ruiner a listen though. Always up for some new melodic hardcore to jam.

for me Texas In July is just more original metalcore and TGI is just a lot more 'basic chug chug' if you get what I mean

Ruiner - Dead Weight, those lyrics at the end of the song basically define what hardcore is to me.

I don't think you can call either band original Beardog but of course I like both bands.

I really wanna check this out but new Aversions crown is so good.

Is this the best TGI?

"for me Texas In July is just more original metalcore"

sorry dude but I had to lol at that one considering TIJ started as an exact rip-off of August Burns Red and only JUST now broke out of that with their newest album

"And I don't know why you added the part about the lyrics. Usually, the only time lyrics define is a subgenre is in hip hop. Metalcore is defined by sound."

True, I never stated that the lyrics defined TGI's sound, I merely stated that they are far more emphasised here than in TiJ. But you're right, both bands can definitely be summarized as Metalcore, but TiJ has an overall heavier sound IMO.

"Is this the best TGI?"

Idk it's pretty much just as good as usual to me but I've got all their albums on about the same level pedestal.

Bloodwork is still August Burns Red tribute shit but at least it's really well performed and there are some hints of personality in there.

True says I had a feeling it would be typical TGI so I'll just wait till later to check it then and shut up betray you don't know me

Again, game, it doesn't mattwrhow the vocals are. Every Time I Die are metalcore, yet there is plenty of clean singing as well as just yelled vocals and screamed vocals.

Wait you're arguing that vocals do not define the genre right, because I'm not trying to say they do. I know vocals can be different styles no matter the genre, but I was just pointing the TGI vocal style as one of the reasons I think they generally have more in common with melodic hardcore than metalcore.

And I'm just trying to tell you that vocal style shoukdnt give you the impression of it being one genre or another.

I don't think I'm basing it wholly on that fact so you can rest easy. I do associate certain vocal styles more often with certain genres but that won't stop me from labeling a metalcore band a metalcore band just because they use the vocal style I associate with something else. It's just one factor among many.

Intothepit

It's pretty poor, Yak.

But you still used it as a main reason for labeling it hardcore, and that's ridiculous

Gameofmetal

So you don't think vocal style has anything at all to do with with genre designation?

Intothepit

I think a lot of bands in certain genres use similar vocal styles, but I don't think vocals have a thing to do wih genre. If that was the case, we would have ridiculous crossover genres that wouldn't make sense.

Lol of course it does. Genres and sub-genres are described by the sound, not by the vocal stylings. I don't know how you got so confused about this. I've heard death metal growls in shitty post hardcore bands, but that doesn't mean they should be labeled as death metal.

I know this is poser hardcore but they write such catchy tunes.

@Apollo, 1) why preface it as if you're embarrassed by it. Its music. Its personal.
2) In what way is it poser?

Dudes seem pretty hardcore to me.

Nevermind the beginning of Mercy is so fucking dumb. At first I thought they were a hardcore band, but it sounds like they're trying to disguise the fact that they're a modern metalcore band with D-Beats every once in a while
