Bono to buy stake in Nirvana

2006-03-27 by Lexluthor | 17 Comments
As reported earlier, Courtney Love is reportedly shopping around for a buyer to a 25% stake in the Nirvana catalogue. The Telegraph reports today that a likely buyer is a company that involves U2 frontman, Bono. "Elevation Partners, the private equity company whose partners include Bono, the U2 singer, is thought to be the front-runner in a multi-million pound deal to acquire a stake in the back catalogue of Nirvana. The deal would give any investor a cut of the royalties every time a Nirvana song is played. The catalogue is reported to have a total value of up to $100m (£57m). Love has said that she wants a partner to co-manage the catalogue, which she finds a large responsibility.

Other groups thought to be in the frame are understood to be Sanctuary, the music group, and Chrysalis, the media group. Chorion, the intellectual property rights company, has also been mooted as a potential buyer although industry insiders have questioned the fit between its brands - which include Mr. Men and Enid Blyton - and Nirvana. A media executive said that Nirvana's songs would be a good asset. However he cautioned that a minority stake would make any acquirer a 'passenger on Love's bus'." As of this moment, no official statement has been made concerning the sale. Read the complete story here.

The rights to the Nirvana catalogue should have never been Love's in the first place. they belong to Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Jason Everman and Chad Channing - the people who actually made the goddam music! This Message Edited On 03.27.06

I agree. However before Kurt died, part of his music was owned by the "Cobain estate". When he died Courtney inherited his estate, and consequently some publishing rights.

thats true, also saying bono is buying the music is extremely misleading, as you say yourself he's a partner in the company.

I dont think it will do much to nirvana anyways, it wont affect them, because so many little kids walk around wearing there hoodies nowdays anyway.

Any music fan will just ignore it and respect kurt cobains death

Bono and Nirvana go together like, an open bottle of pills and a three year old. Yeah that was lame but my point is that Bono shouldn't touch Nirvana's stuff.

I hope they sell each and every Nirvana song to Pepsi, Coke, Starbucks and Ford. That'd make my year.

I would much rather listen to Hole then Nirvana, for the record. This Message Edited On 03.27.06

First Love, now Bono. I feel so pissed at this corporate shit. Why cant the credit of good (or bad) art go to the rightful artists themelves, instead of the richest bums who can afford to BUY the art. i'm so NOT impressed by Bono anyway and this thing doesnt make matters better.
