He's been pretty tight-lipped about it, but iirc he said there would be no growls. If I had to guess I'd say it would probably be like Watershed/Ghost Reveries-era instrumentation (i.e. heavy at times) with more progressive tendencies and all clean vox.

If its going to meet the enormously high expectations we have for Opeth after some of their masterpieces like Blackwater park, or Ghost Reveries is another question entirely.

I'm sure this album will be good. No matter the style, I think Opeth are talented enough to pull off whatever concept they set out for themselves. I liked Damnation and Heritage just as much as MAYH, Still Life, so I'm excited to see a refined "blend" of those two worlds or at least a sound that is different (of not new) to them.

From what I've gathered, this is going to sound like (and Kyle has mentioned this) a Ghost Reveries/Watershed album minus the growls, with some Storm Corrosion/Comus/Heritage-esque folk compositions which I'm kind of excited for.

the growls were one of the best parts of Opeth's music, so its kind of understandable that people might miss them.

I'm expecting a Damnation-meets-Ghost Reveries album here. Also, the growls were only an small part of what makes Opeth's music so awesome; they added some punch. But his cleans are so beautiful anyways, and Opeth really needs to explore their melodic side further.

Just how heated people get over this band and specifically, Hertiage-era Opeth.
I mean I look at like this, Heritage had some messy parts that made it sound unfocused at times and perhaps if wore it's influences a little too proudly. BUT it had great production, vocals and musicianship. Axe and Mendez really upped their game. It sticks out as a the odd one in their catalogue but the amount of shot it gets is beyond comprehension.
Which is where I don't understand metal fans, a band can change so long as it's imn approved?

Heritage was really disappointing, with only about 1/3 of the tracks really grabbing me. Watershed had some real gems but also a couple of songs so horrible that they're basically unlistenable. I'm nervous about Pale Communion. The last Opeth album I truly loved was Ghost Reveries; I want my "real" Opeth back.

My main concern isn't that this won't contain elements of their older sound, but that they won't be able to match the quality of those albums once again.

With Damnation they proved that they can write amazing music even with no death metal elements incoporated. Heritage wasn't lackluster because it wasn't sooper hevvy, it was lackluster because it just wasn't as good.

Well, how can we compare? Damnation still had that dark feeling their previous albums had, though Heritage was prog rock...
