A :30 sample of Linkin Park's new single, "What I've Done" (off the upcoming album Minutes to Midnight) is now online at the above address.

As has been reported here at Sputnikmusic, the new album is expected on May 15th, and both the band and producer Rick Rubin have had a lot to say about the band's development.

Mike Shinoda said in a statement:

[The album shows] a breakthrough in the development of the band's sound. We wrote in new ways, and used instruments and equipment we hadn't experimented with before...We tried to question every step in our songwriting process.

Shinoda, who's also recently been busy between Meteora and Minutes to Midnight working as a producer and with Fort Minor, co-produced the album with Rick Rubin and said he enjoyed working with the 2007 Grammy winner for Producer of the Year.

Rick's amazing. He's awesome. He's constantly... the thing about Rick that I love is he's unpredictable. He'll listen to a song and he'll throw out an idea that seems like it's just completely out of nowhere, but it makes a lot of sense and it makes the song better.

As for Rubin's take on the new Linkin Park:

They really are reinventing themselves, it doesn't sound like rap-rock. There's very strong songwriting. It's very melodic... a progressive record.

I think I'd need more then 30 seconds to judge...But from that it was okay.

Minutes to midnight?

Yeah I have listened to Maiden. Maybe they think they are underground? Who knows.

Also, the song sounds like sh&$8234;it. Even Rush, who should be more scared of technologies have a more decent, better quality full track of their new album, and that's something I actually want to hear.

Yeh. I want to flame the album so bad.

I don't think it was too shabby. But then again I liked Meteora so I was interested in the first place.

Sounds to me like they stepped away from nu-metal and jumped on the next trendy rock sound. Promises to be bland as hell.

If someone told me that was a new MCR song I honestly wouldn't know the difference.

So basically "going progressive" translates into "going pop punk."

Seriously, I knew all the hype would be for nothing. Bands always make these righteous claims and then the albums turn out to be complete poser garbage.

If I wasn't told that was Linkin Park, I would have thought that it was 30 Seconds to Mars or something.

No dude, there's a piano. It's automatically progressive. Where are you guys getting "pop punk" from, though? All I hear is some bad Exorcist cover.

Wow, how can you people judge a whole album from 30 seconds of music?! Here's an idea: why don't you wait for the whole album to come out first before flaming the hell out of it?

I'll just say that those 30 seconds had no hint of progressiveness in them.

I'll just say judging by previous Linkin Park experiences, that thirty seconds is all I need to hear to be able to sum up an entire song.

^^ That's true.

Judging by past Linkin Park experiences, I can safely say that they wouldn't do anything different because they have to have that trendy radio sound to make money. Changing their sound simply means moving on to the next trendy bandwagon sound.

betcha its gonna be garbage.

I was hoping for a small taste of vocals and some guitar to sum things up but I can't judge on a short prelude.

^^ There were vocals and guitar. The vocals were very pop punk sounding. This Message Edited On 03.15.07

Wait, LP are making a 64 minute album? Their first two full-length original cds together hardly even reach that mark...This Message Edited On 03.16.07

xclaimer2006:
I can guarantee you, after listening to those 30 seconds of demo, that this album will suck because they have never made a descent album to begin with. no skill = shitty band!
Thats just my opinion on the matter.
