TVOTR Condemn 'Racist' Cartoon 2007-02-15 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 18 Comments | Sometime TV On The Radio collaborator, saxophone/flute player Martin Perna, has had an angry letter published in New York's weekly free publication The Village Voice, in which he labels the cover cartoon from a previous issue as "racist."
The cartoon is question adorned the cover of the magazine's February 7 issue, depicting Bob Dylan running over (black) band member Kyp Malone, a visual reference to the result of the year's Pazz & Jop critics poll, in which Dylan narrowly defeated TV On The Radio in the best album poll.
Perna's angry letter, which was published both in print and on the publication's website, scorns the insensitivity of staff who would allow such an insensitive portrayal to go to print, knowing the deep-rooted racial tension and legacy of violence which exists between America's white and black communities.
Perna went on to directly accuse the magazine's staff of racism, making reference to the infamous murders of David O'Keefe and James Byrd, but qualifies his statement slightly, adding "intentional or not" and closes with the (possibly) facetious line Make something too unique, make something outside of your assigned place-role, and get run over by a white man."
We want to know your thoughts on the subject. Is Perna over-reacting, or was the picture's publication motivated by a conscious or subconscious desire to segregate the races?

This angers me, because I would not see it as a sign of racism at all. Lame cover anywayThis Message Edited On 02.15.07This Message Edited On 02.15.07
| | | He's definitely overreacting. I can see where he's coming from, but to accuse the staff of racism and to bring up past affairs is nonsense. If it had been anyone else, it'd be no big deal. Race has nothing to do with it. It's people vs. people (or in this case, Dylan vs. Malone), and it's only that way because of a "best album poll."
Yeah, and what a lame cover. Dylan should be mad about it, too.
edit: Although, it's odd that it says "Blood on the Tracks!" It's obviously meant to be a "clever" take on TV on the Radio, but still. This Message Edited On 02.15.07
| | | I do not agree with the magazine cover saying "blood on the tracks" at all though.
| | | I think if I was Bob Dylan I'd be mad at them calling me old.
Seriously TVOTR shut the fuck up.
| | | hahaha what an idiot. the fact that he sees a white man running over a black man instead of Bob Dylan running over Kyp Malone shows how eager the guy is to get on his soapbox and bitch about something, as well as how racially charged he is. TVOTR have a good place in music right now and they're gonna fuck it up since this isn't the first time they go off on dumb rants.
| | | When people have to bring race into something that has nothing to do at all with it fuckimg pisses me off. Seriously, it was meant to be funny and he had to be an ass and play the race card. Why is that race always has to be an issue when it has nothing at all to do with it?
| | | tv on the radio sucks and they need to not be so gay. it wasnt racist. slavery has been abolished and no big magazine publisher is going to have something that implies racism. unless its a racist magazine i guess. so shut up and try to make good music, this shows that crap sells in the u.s.
| | | by the way. bob dylan is the man and deserves to beat these guys out
| | | ZOMG BIGOT!!
you used gay as an insult and that's not cool. :[
And also, you're wrong. TV on the Radio is fantastic.
| | | um wait a minute
what about Dylan's massive jew-nose?
| | | The worst thing about this is Dylan's album being named the best of the year.
| | | Jesus baby-eating Christ... I know what the right thing to say is, but the wrong one is funnier. Dare I?
| | | Agree with Zmev^^, espesh since Return to Cookie Mountain is incredible.
| | | i didnt mean to use gay in a diragatory way, just comes natural to say. im not homophobic. i dont think dylan shouldve got album of the year. but TVONR im just not impressed with
| | | i'm sorry but the way i see it, Martin Perna is being the racist in this instant. it only shows that he is seperating himself from other humans by the color of his skin. any normal person would see one artist running over another, not a white man running over a black man.
