Dixie Chicks Storm Grammys 2007-02-12 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 9 Comments | The sensational return from exile of The Dixie Chicks was completed in storybook form last night, as the female trio scooped all three of the major honours and five in total.
As the 400-hour ceremony unfolded, the Chicks were presented with Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the Rick Rubin-produced 'Not Ready to Make Nice,' and Album of the Year for 'Taking The Long Way,' also produced by Rubin. The song and album titles make clear reference to the difficulties the three have had to endure in recent times, however they must be commended for milking their experience for all its worth.
The group alienated a large portion of their audience in the lead-up to the US invasion of Iraq, making disparaging remarks about President Bush in a radio interview, however all seems to have been forgiven and forgotten by the musical community, as fans once again made their latest album one of the year's top-sellers.
Other top winners this year included American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, who beat out James Blunt and Corinne Bailey-Rae for the Best New Artist Honour, Gnarls Barkley overcame disappointment in the Record and Album of the Year stakes to receive the Best Alternative Music Album honour for St. Elsewhere, while Christina Aguilera's 'Ain't No Other Man' won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Bob Dylan won Best Solo Rock Performance for the track 'Someday Baby,' The Red Hot Chilli Peppers were honoured with Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Group for 'Dani California, while their album Stadium Arcadium picked up the Best Rock Album honour. Slayer beat out Lamb of God and Mastadon to win Best Metal Performance for 'Eyes of the Insane' and Wolfmother won Best Hard Rock Performance for 'Woman.'
The day's biggest losers included James Blunt, who received five nominations and walked away empty-handed, and Arctic Monkeys, who failed to impress the judging panel enough to merit an award. The reformed Police opened the ceremony with their classic 'Roxanne,' and further performances on the night came from Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Gnarls Barkley, Christina Aguilera, while Chris Brown, Lionel Richie and Smokey Robinson teamed up for a tribute to posterity's greatest male r&b singers.
