foos is really where his personality shines through i feel. they're a rock band, which in terms of 'rock music' fans, garners the reputation he's earned as the cool guy. sure, the music may be pretty formulaic, but compared to other rock bands, it does set itself apart, and whether people truly realize that, they at least are smart enough to assume it, since dave expresses his distaste for cookie cutter rock music n stuff all the time..

I don't hate the Foo Fighters at all. They seem like a great bunch of guys, but a lot of their music is just too one-dimensional for me to like as much as I want to. I like a lot of their songs and thought Wasting Light was great, but they'll never be more than a 3.5-4 band for me.

Why compare Foos with Queens? Foos are radio rock formed out of the grunge scene, and Queens are an alt rock band that formed out of the desert rock scene.
They're completely different in sound, and they're both completely good.

I enjoyed Them Crooked Vultures and Rated R/Songs For The Deaf from Queens of the Stone Age, but not so much with last two QOTSA albums, especially Era Vulgaris. Hopefully, Grohl will have a positive impact on the songwriting, plus he is a pretty bitchin drummer.

I like Foo Fighters too, but I think I would pick earlier QOTSA or TCV albums over the Foo on most occasions.
