I love the fact that they haven't abandoned their sound regardless of how different the approach might be. Still the same old Opeth and still just as awesome.

they're entering tricky territory. Opeth always skirted the line between tasteful and obnoxious. Removing the harsher elements could really open up their range of expression, or make a dream theater out of themselves.

Repeated riff at 3:30 makes me want to turn off the song on first listen. What the fuck that shit's annoying? Other than that, fantastic drumming, great cleans but stupendously boring vocal lines, 'evil keyboards' don't work at all with 'new Opeth', don't miss the metal at all. Not really sure what to think yet, kinda meh, and was looking forward to it a lot.

Per Wiberg. He recorded this album with them, his last official album with Opeth, and then left. So he's on the record, but they have a different dude for the live setting; no clue who that guy is though.
This is a good song though, very different. A lot more prog than any of their other stuff. The no death growls fits the song but it's slightly disappointing in that respect. However, I can honestly say I already like this song better than almost all of Watershed.

Enjoyed it, but I thought there was going to be less growls, not none. A shame, but still pretty excited. Seeing them in November, with Katatonia were the supports in the UK too...

Sounds really cool, seems like their sound changed a whole lot from watershed, still keeping the Opeth elements we all love. Im truly excited to hear the rest of the album.

Honestly, what I didn't like about Watershed is that it seemed like he tried to hard to make the heavier/death metal parts. Where this seems more effortlessly done. The proggier, the less death it really needs to be. I dig it, and as a fan of 70s prog as well, it is a nice new touch.

The keyboard work on this song is fantastic

Opeth = Win on this. Though it will be interesting out this ties into the whole album. That solo at the end was extremely well done.

I was more impressed with this song than their last couple albums. On the other hand, I don't know if an entire album of this will be any good. Last, I agree that Martin would have been a better drummer for this style. He was always talking about how Mikael wouldn't let him really do much with the drums and on this album it sounds like he would have been allowed.

When I read that I was very excited. I hardly imagined how the 'best Opeth yet' would sound like. But after listening to the song I was very disappointed, this is not exciting at all, to me it sounds like average prog-rock.

Sounds interesting, seems like something that'll grow on me after the 3rd or 4th listen just like every other Opeth.

I fucking love this. And as much as I love the tension that the heaviness brought on their old stuff, they have so much of that - I wouldn't be interested in hearing them write the same album again.

I was waiting for "Opeth streams now song" for like a few months, checking this site for some news almost each day. And what I get? A song with no flow, made from some random 30-second fragments stiched together that could be placed in any order, no high point - the song never really "starts", all those moments lead to no conclusion and what could be the song's great finish (the guitar solo) last like how long? 3 seconds? Wow, prog metal. :/ I'm gonna listen to the song for the whole day and check if it grows with time. Maybe the song will look better when listening to the album as a whole.

Going by this they will, for me continue with their current run of yawn-worthy albums.
Mikael leave the keyboard out of one fucking song please, it's so bad and so high in the mix i can hardly focus on anything else. Drums are pretty darn good though.

That's what I'm going to do aswell, it worked for Watershed. It's not my favorite album and it took me time to appreciate it.

It's growing on me; an interesting prog rock effort, although I agree with what someone else said about "I'm not sure what emotion they are trying to get out of me." It seems to lack a little focus.

when the solo begins around 5:50,....opeth wriggling itself from its death chains and taking to the sky....before hiding into some creek....

the actual vocal melodies aren't that far from typical Opeth. in fact they ARE typical Opeth. the background guitars a la Blackwater Park/In Absentia are there. the synth is classic prog, but the bit around 3:00 is really really atmospheric. kinda reminds me of Badalamenti's music, if you take away the drumming

Opeth used to make me picture castles and forests and brooding in dungeons of stone, and majestic Swedish landscapes. This just makes me picture a music workshop and maybe some instrument demonstrations.

The drumming was great, but besides that I've never understood the hype behind these guys. I get just as much hate from saying "Blackwater Park sucks" as I do saying "Dimebag sucked".

It's generic prog metal at best, and the growls are never very good. So their absence from this was welcome.

I agree with Crysis. "God is Dead" is so generic it's laughable, and besides the keyboard part, the song sort of blurs together with unintelligible lyrics. It's sort of like a thick stew that just doesn't settle right.

Been trying to figure the lyrics out. I think the song could be from the perspective of Satan, or maybe a soul in hell. The Devil's Orchard could be like the satanic garden of eden or something. Yes the song is growing on me now.

Songs ok. What made this band great for me was how they fused both death metal and prog. They should be doing this type of stuff under a different band name if Akerfeldt doesnt want to do work with the harsh stuff anymore. His vox are still amazing, but there's something off about this. Like someone mentioned, a whole album of this could be difficult to digest but we'll see.

I agree completely. Having death growls absent on an Opeth album might get to be a little much. Its been proven on Damnation that it could work but still, having all clean vocals more than every once in a while on an Opeth album just seems odd to me. I love Akerfeldts death growl, and will probably miss it a lot on Heritage

Yea, and also Damnation had Deliverance coupled with it so it was like both together were one Opeth album to me (as odd as that sounds). But we'll see what happens on the 20th of Sept.
