Owns. No surprise, though.

ire/5
| |
surprisingly not awful
| |
Song owns
| |
Best thing about this is the artwork.
| |
Wow, that was fucking sick. I'm excited.
| |
Not too bad, but:
If listening to this track doesn't get you super excited for 'Heritage' you might want to have your ears checked. This might be the best Opeth yet.
Lmao
| |
Also, that artwork is nasty.
| |
Can't wait to listen to this out of curiosity alone.
| |
It's a lot proggier.
| |
and sputnik explodes
| |
dang this was way better than i expected kinda excited for this now
| |
GGGOOOOODD ISSS DEEEEAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDD
| |
yo is dis beardfish or opeth 4 real
| |
That was pretty sweet, coming from a kid who's never listened to them much before.
But seriously, that album art is still hilarious.
It'd be cool, if their heads weren't in the tree.
| |
don't like it that much but it's okay :]
| |
I already prefer this to anything on Blackwater Park. BLASPHEMY, i know.
| |
North, you've seriously never given them a proper listen?
Still Life your life around.
| |
Guitar solo is wicked, but the rest of the song doesn't really do it for me.
| |
can't believe how awesome this is
| |
I liked it
| |
Yep, this is awesome
| |
Not really a fan, sadly. It's definitely good, but not interesting enough for me to really care to give it another listen.
| |
the vocals are vastly improved, thats for sure.
| |
no growls = improvement, right
| |
That song was fucking sweet. I'm really stoked for the new album after hearing that song.
| |
no growls = this is not blackwater park 1/5
| |
That was better than I expected yeah sounds like this'll be a lot of fun.
| |
"North, you've seriously never given them a proper listen?"
It's true, I honestly haven't. I've listened to a few songs here and there, but I never invested much more than an hour in listening to them, I don't know why, I just haven't lol.
| |
so they only do clean vocals now, right?
| |
Yeah this rules. Maybe a little sloppy but I'm digging it.
| |
Axe is truly a monster. Can't wait to hear what he does for the rest of the album.
| |
had a buddy who really wanted me to be into them as much as he was but just couldn't. saw them live twice though. i think they're best live
| |
anyone else fell like these guys are on drugs now...
| |
I love the fact that they haven't abandoned their sound regardless of how different the approach might be. Still the same old Opeth and still just as awesome.
That being said, still not better than anything from Still Life or Blackwater Park ;]
| |
no growls is a massive improvement.
| |
album cover looks like it was inspired by 70's rock records
| |
I thought the growls always brought them down, so all cleans would be cool
| |
can't wait to listen when I get home
Is it heavy?
| |
well that was certainly a change of pace.
| |
its not heavy
| |
The vocals are amazing which makes up for there being no growls.
This still sounds warped and flat out creepy regardless.
| |
Didn't really like it on first listen.
| |
blech :/
| |
Sounds like a much better version of Nightingale.
Nice song really.
| |
excellent song
| |
The drums are insane.
My whole outlook on Axe has changed completely.
| |
someone's been listening to too much King Crimson
| |
I made a first page post. Yay!
| |
It's pretty good and very nice to hear after that awful Mastodon track.
| |
was like "pretty good" then 4:47 and was like "cool"
| |
I hate prog. Dislike the song it until the 3 minute part which gets pretty good.
| |
Goin' all retro on us, eh? Doesn't sound too bad.
| |
GOD IS DEAD!
This song made my day.
| |
meh that was ok
| |
balls how can you hate prog wtf
song is really damn good listened like 5 times fuck yea
| |
How can I not hate prog?
| |
so are you telling me you dont like rush or pink floyd or genesis
i thought we were bros
| |
i LOVE ONE FlOYD ALBUM DONT LISTEN TO GENESIS, RUSH ANYTHING. MY ATTENTION SPAN DOES NOT AGREE WITH PROG.
| |
Ooooh.
| |
That main riff is pretty King Crimson-esque.
they're entering tricky territory. Opeth always skirted the line between tasteful and obnoxious. Removing the harsher elements could really open up their range of expression, or make a dream theater out of themselves.
| |
your attention span works with Paysage d'Hiver but not Rush... does not compute.
| |
NEEDS MOAR OPETH
| |
ummm
| |
I miss old Opeth :[
Oh well, song was great as expected
| |
I liked that a lot.
| |
Not sure how I feel about this.
| |
tell us when you are
| |
song was pretty good but not really mind blowing or anything to me. Might grow on me, who knows.
| |
Not sure how I feel about this.
im really interested in what you feel
| |
SO GOOD!
| |
After third listen.
That God is dead bit is stuck in my head
| |
It's awesome, really great balance between their old style and a new approach.
| |
album cover reminds me of creed.
| |
"I miss old Opeth :[
Oh well, song was great as expected"
:[
| |
The song is great.
Haters just mad that it isn't metal enough. I prefer this to the same rehashing of boring melodeath.
| |
Song kicks ass. Fuck haters.
| |
?? i just dont understand what makes ppl love them so much?? its not that good?? it sounds like an average song
| |
Only heard a little bit, but it was enjoyable.
| |
nahh man, song is great. Although a whole album like this may become a bit boring, I think.
| |
Seriously stop saying shit like "Blackwater Park was better" or "There are no growls so this sucks" etc.
Of course it was better, Blackwater Park is one of the best albums ever written, they will never top Blackwater Park or Still Life.
This is very good though, a lot different than Watershed.
| |
lucasjcockcroft, your avatar is of blink182 and you're currently digging some awful shit scene band. Your opinion has no merit.
| |
lucasjcockcroft all the albums you gave a 5 rating are terrible (except Dirt)
| |
what is an opeth
| |
omg
I was kind of disappointed with the lack of growls, but I figured Akerfeldt knows what he's doing and I was right. Also, my opinion on Axe's drumming changed
2011 rules, the Circle Takes the Square, Ghost Brigade and Steven Wilson teasers sounded awesome as fuck too
| |
anyone know who the keyboardist is?
| |
Song is pretty good.
Will listen to it more though.
| |
Very different territory, but I love it.
| |
"It's pretty good and very nice to hear after that awful Mastodon track."
I Lol'd hard
| |
Progressive Opeth? Cool.
| |
PROG.
| |
The Mastodon song is also pretty good
| |
Repeated riff at 3:30 makes me want to turn off the song on first listen. What the fuck that shit's annoying? Other than that, fantastic drumming, great cleans but stupendously boring vocal lines, 'evil keyboards' don't work at all with 'new Opeth', don't miss the metal at all. Not really sure what to think yet, kinda meh, and was looking forward to it a lot.
| |
"anyone know who the keyboardist is?"
Per Wiberg. He recorded this album with them, his last official album with Opeth, and then left. So he's on the record, but they have a different dude for the live setting; no clue who that guy is though.
This is a good song though, very different. A lot more prog than any of their other stuff. The no death growls fits the song but it's slightly disappointing in that respect. However, I can honestly say I already like this song better than almost all of Watershed.
| |
Enjoyed it, but I thought there was going to be less growls, not none. A shame, but still pretty excited. Seeing them in November, with Katatonia were the supports in the UK too...
| |
song is better off without the growls
| |
this makes me happy.
| |
wait what about CTTS?!! also i just bought my ticket for the columbus show.
| |
very cool, very jazzy drumming. really looking forward to this album.
| |
rules
| |
Sounds really cool, seems like their sound changed a whole lot from watershed, still keeping the Opeth elements we all love. Im truly excited to hear the rest of the album.
| |
sounds alright, starts off dull but second half is pretty good.
| |
Listened to this last night. Thought it was good. Hopefully the rest of the album follows suit.
| |
i honestly liked the "Damnation" era opeth the most.
this just sounds like a rip off of dream theater, and i hate them.
the vocals are pretty damn good though.
| |
Wow i didn't think it was possible to be worse than i thought it was going to be.
But damn.
| |
Guitar tone is dreadful...
| |
This pleases me. I absolutely love their brutal side, but on this evidence, clean Opeth really could work. Damnation was good but it didn't grab me anything like this song has. Also, good to know that they can write better 'softies' than Burden these days. September 16th looks promising...
| |
I loved the guitar tone. I also love the artwork. The song was all over the place though.
| |
Really don't know what to think of this. Will need to give it a few more listens, but it seems to be a bit below their standards.
| |
This is a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I absolutely HATE Damnation, so I'm glad they
didn't go in that direction again. Maybe I should go listen to Damnation again, everyone loves it,
maybe I'm missing something.
Part at 4:47 blew my mind.
| |
The transitions are so abrupt that it feels like crashing into a redwood.
| |
yea its cool. not big on the lyrics, but this is King Crimson prog all the fuckin way.
| |
Yeah the fuck this is prog worship with the same old tired chord progressions opeth has been using since forever.
And it's sloppy to top that. They should go back to being just plain old boring.
| |
^Most unbiased comment ever.
| |
I rather enjoyed that I must say.
| |
the same old tired chord progressions
This is pretty much why I'm starting to get bored of a lot of their stuff.
| |
Typical Opeth song with less metal and more prog. It was ok, but I'm kind of over these guys.
Cool ass drumming, though.
| |
awesome
| |
"i LOVE ONE FlOYD ALBUM DONT LISTEN TO GENESIS, RUSH ANYTHING. MY ATTENTION SPAN DOES NOT AGREE WITH PROG."
Pretty much how I feel.
| |
While I love the track, I hope the album mixes it up a lot. Sweden already has an Anekdoten and a Landberk; they don't need another.
| |
never heard of this band before, r dey any good
| |
wtf Opeth....song's kinda boring.
| |
It's okay, nothing special really
the drumming is phenomenal though....almost sounds like Martin Mendez drumming with them again
| |
*Martin Lopez
Mendez is their bass player.
| |
prog central
| |
hahaha what a surprise poet doesnt like it
| |
i dunno it was ok i guess
| |
my bad Angel that's who I meant lol
| |
it wasn't bad but then again i liked watershed
| |
avatar is win ovrot
| |
varg makes me laugh like a racist grandparent does.
| |
Honestly, what I didn't like about Watershed is that it seemed like he tried to hard to make the heavier/death metal parts. Where this seems more effortlessly done. The proggier, the less death it really needs to be. I dig it, and as a fan of 70s prog as well, it is a nice new touch.
| |
The keyboard work on this song is fantastic
| |
Opeth = Win on this. Though it will be interesting out this ties into the whole album. That solo at the end was extremely well done.
| |
"hahaha what a surprise poet doesnt like it"
haha i know so funny rite??
I actually like Opeth though.
| |
yea but no growls = gay right
| |
Song was good, but I wasn't expecting that. I was kind of hoping for more...i don't know, death metal.
| |
brutal death
| |
"yea but no growls = gay right"
nah I prefer his clean singing anyways. Song was just bland.
| |
Since when?
| |
I'm not sure that applies to this day and age. Most modern progressive music afficianados are more or less fanboys. Besides, the response to this was mostly positive.
| |
Finally :D
| |
We should take a vote:
Who thinks this is a good band?
| |
lopez needs to be drumming for this style, the new one sux
| |
was not at all impressed
if this is any indication i think this will be one of opeth's worst
| |
I was more impressed with this song than their last couple albums. On the other hand, I don't know if an entire album of this will be any good. Last, I agree that Martin would have been a better drummer for this style. He was always talking about how Mikael wouldn't let him really do much with the drums and on this album it sounds like he would have been allowed.
| |
it was alright. the part at around 4:50 was pretty cool.
| |
Seriously stop saying shit like "Blackwater Park was better" or "There are no growls so this sucks" etc.
WTF?! no one said that
| |
I seriously miss Lopez and Lindgren so much
| |
Track was kinda boring honestly
| |
This is just a transitional album, Deviant. They'll be hooking up with Skrillex for the next one.
| |
You'll be over the moon!
| |
I think it's too self indulgent, even for their standards but it's ok fuck Opeth. Fuck Opeth in the ass.
| |
I think Opeth fucks you in the ass. SIR!
| |
Hold up Willie, Skrillex is too busy with Korns new dubstep album lol
| |
He'll have time. You'll see.
| |
haha you guys are reading way too into this. just enjoy it for what it is.
| |
Sounds much better after smoking some weed and putting on headphones for a second listen.
But wow. Not very opethy.
| |
Good but unsure this sound will work for me over an entire album. The dm added so much more tension and atmosphere in contrasting with the lighter sections.
| |
There's a lot of deep purple in there. I always thought they should seriously get the dm part aside for a while, so I think this might be their best
| |
Don't really like this...Thank god I wasn't hyped for it or anything.
| |
Quoting from the website:
"If listening to this track doesn't get you super excited for 'Heritage' you might want to have your ears checked. This might be the best Opeth yet."
When I read that I was very excited. I hardly imagined how the 'best Opeth yet' would sound like. But after listening to the song I was very disappointed, this is not exciting at all, to me it sounds like average prog-rock.
| |
Sounds interesting, seems like something that'll grow on me after the 3rd or 4th listen just like every other Opeth.
Album will be solid.
| |
I fucking love this. And as much as I love the tension that the heaviness brought on their old stuff, they have so much of that - I wouldn't be interested in hearing them write the same album again.
This is very intriguing.
| |
Holy shit this is amazing. Album cover rules hard. Drumming is quite sexy. 6/5
| |
Song is awesome, admit it
| |
I was waiting for "Opeth streams now song" for like a few months, checking this site for some news almost each day. And what I get? A song with no flow, made from some random 30-second fragments stiched together that could be placed in any order, no high point - the song never really "starts", all those moments lead to no conclusion and what could be the song's great finish (the guitar solo) last like how long? 3 seconds? Wow, prog metal. :/ I'm gonna listen to the song for the whole day and check if it grows with time. Maybe the song will look better when listening to the album as a whole.
| |
Going by this they will, for me continue with their current run of yawn-worthy albums.
Mikael leave the keyboard out of one fucking song please, it's so bad and so high in the mix i can hardly focus on anything else. Drums are pretty darn good though.
| |
still have yet to even try to get into opeth...
does that mean I'm dead to you guys?
| |
so much better than Mastodon's new one
| |
@ TheKleszcz
I exactly have the same feeling about the song.
"I'm gonna listen to the song for the whole day and check if it grows with time. Maybe the song will look better when listening to the album as a whole."
That's what I'm going to do aswell, it worked for Watershed. It's not my favorite album and it took me time to appreciate it.
| |
Pretty good stuff
| |
It's entertaining but I fail to see what kind of emotion I'm supposed to get from it.
| |
wow this is so much different than previous opeth. hopefully the whole album's gonna be like this..though i'll certainly miss the death growls
| |
It's growing on me; an interesting prog rock effort, although I agree with what someone else said about "I'm not sure what emotion they are trying to get out of me." It seems to lack a little focus.
| |
when the solo begins around 5:50,....opeth wriggling itself from its death chains and taking to the sky....before hiding into some creek....
| |
boring
| |
the actual vocal melodies aren't that far from typical Opeth. in fact they ARE typical Opeth. the background guitars a la Blackwater Park/In Absentia are there. the synth is classic prog, but the bit around 3:00 is really really atmospheric. kinda reminds me of Badalamenti's music, if you take away the drumming
| |
oh yeah. the growls are missing. not necessarily a bad thing
| |
Opeth used to make me picture castles and forests and brooding in dungeons of stone, and majestic Swedish landscapes. This just makes me picture a music workshop and maybe some instrument demonstrations.
| |
Song is pretty good.
| |
The drumming was great, but besides that I've never understood the hype behind these guys. I get just as much hate from saying "Blackwater Park sucks" as I do saying "Dimebag sucked".
It's generic prog metal at best, and the growls are never very good. So their absence from this was welcome.
A little better than their previous efforts.
| |
"It's generic prog metal at best, and the growls are never very good."
Your kidding right?
| |
Yeah for sure man. And the growls really sucked on this song didn't they?
| |
THE ARTWORK IS GARBAGE
| |
Song growing quite a bit. Honestly, what other direction could they have really gone in and not stagnated? They can't just keep remaking BP and SL forever (or can they?!)
| |
This track was very good , but is not at the same level of stil life and blackwater park .
| |
yeah, per will be sorely missed. i also agree that lopez would have been a better drummer for this new sound - he just had such awesome finesse.
| |
hmmmm...i like it...
| |
It could be better if Opeth had confidence in its new direction. It's pretty good, though.
| |
aw man this sucked
| |
unimpressive
| |
Fuck the prog hate! Those were the golden years of music and creativity, and this song is so fucking nasty to pay respects to it. The whole album will, and I can't wait.
| |
if i wanted to listen to 70s prog I'd listen to 70s prog
this is just kind of meh
| |
Opeth Metal Band out of the 90's. now the Best Prog Rock band out in the 10's
this song is a 5. Im Excited!.
This is The dream album for Mikael!
| |
Nothing short of awesome but what else would you expect.
| |
i strongly dislike opeth, but this track was perty goooood...
ps: without the growls, akerfelt's vocals get pretty tedious
| |
His singing is unreal compared to most metal frontmen.
| |
song isn't getting better with repeated listens
| |
I agree with Crysis. "God is Dead" is so generic it's laughable, and besides the keyboard part, the song sort of blurs together with unintelligible lyrics. It's sort of like a thick stew that just doesn't settle right.
| |
How has nobody said this sounds a lot like Porcupine Tree yet?
also, King Crimson
| |
"God is Dead" is so generic it's laughable"
I think the way he sings that line is the coolest part of the song.
| |
Remember when Opeth used to come up with good interesting lyrics? They made the songs more interesting, but "God is dead" to me just sounds like a cop out.
| |
more camel than king crimson
| |
It almost seems as if "Heritage" may be referring to the roots of the musicians influence?
I didn't complain when Opeth did an acoustic album and I'm not gonna complain if they make a 70's prog homage album.
| |
I'll complain for you, then. Sounded like something from Watershed, minus the heavy guitars. Kinda boring.
| |
"[God is dead] I think the way he sings that line is the coolest part of the song."
I agree
| |
It's not bad but it doesn't sound like same band who did The Leper Affinity. Also, the production is fucking awful (I don't care if it's meant to sound like in the 70's)
| |
If you're complaining about the lyrics, fuck off.
| |
His clean vocals just get better and better.
| |
I used to be into these guys, not so much anymore. Song was really good though, I like them better as straight up prog tbh
| |
pretty shitty
| |
for all the haters: "stigmas revealing our biases"
| |
So many butthurt people here. I'm sure Opeth have better things to do than cater to your exact tastes, or what you think Opeth should sound like. I'm glad they're changing it up a bit.
| |
Been trying to figure the lyrics out. I think the song could be from the perspective of Satan, or maybe a soul in hell. The Devil's Orchard could be like the satanic garden of eden or something. Yes the song is growing on me now.
| |
I keep reading people mentioning the fact that they feel the song is unfocused due to a lack of being able to pinpoint what Mikael likely intended the listener to feel.
Now, this may be a bit pretentious, but there's a possibility the song (being as it is about "The Devils Orchard") is a reference to desolation, bewilderment, and in a sense turmoil. Which, if that's the case, I feel it was executed rather well. A simple matter of perspective I suppose.
Regardless, the more I listen to it, the more I dig it. Opeth has always been a "grower" type band for me, but they are always the most appealing, and impacting, over the long term.
So, here's to high hopes!
| |
Now, this may be a bit pretentious, but there's a possibility the song (being as it is about "The Devils Orchard") is a reference to desolation, bewilderment, and in a sense turmoil.
that's just stupid :[ i don't feel bewildered, i just feel like i've listened to something really disorganised
| |
It was alright...
Some parts feel stolen from Watershed. Probably like a 3/3.5 from me if that's the average song quality. And I love all their other shit.
| |
average song quality should be 2.5
| |
not enuf blast beats
| |
I think Still Life is the only thing I like by these guys anymore.
| |
Songs ok. What made this band great for me was how they fused both death metal and prog. They should be doing this type of stuff under a different band name if Akerfeldt doesnt want to do work with the harsh stuff anymore. His vox are still amazing, but there's something off about this. Like someone mentioned, a whole album of this could be difficult to digest but we'll see.
| |
I agree completely. Having death growls absent on an Opeth album might get to be a little much. Its been proven on Damnation that it could work but still, having all clean vocals more than every once in a while on an Opeth album just seems odd to me. I love Akerfeldts death growl, and will probably miss it a lot on Heritage
| |
Yea, and also Damnation had Deliverance coupled with it so it was like both together were one Opeth album to me (as odd as that sounds). But we'll see what happens on the 20th of Sept.
| |
I was reading an interview and he said that he sings throughout the whole album.
| |
Not surprised by how lacklustre this is upon first listen but I wasn't expecting much either (atleast not after how boring half of Ghost Reveries and Watershed were).
| |
listened to this again hahahaha its so gay
| |
Sick bump man probably the best yet
| |
duh, i wrote it.
| |
GOD IS DEAD
lmao fuck off opeth you used to be so good
| |
This may be the first Opeth album I can find myself enjoying.
| |
Opeth doesn't look so good anymore
| |
It will be their best Album. That's for sure.
| |
Fuck that I don't want a progressive opeth, where's teh detttthhhhs
| |
"It will be their best Album. That's for sure"
lol seriously?
| |
I'm giving this a 1 on the sole basis of that horrid guitar tone... good god...
| |
Can they just re-release Still Life with a new cover and change the song names?
| |
Not bad
| |
