Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

2010-09-28 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 61 Comments
Tom Waits, Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper are three of six first-time nominees announced today for possible induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

Neil Diamond, Dr. John and Donovan are the three remaining virgins on the list, while the Beastie Boys, Chic and Donna Summer are among nine returning runners-up. LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, J Geils Band, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis round out the 15-strong list.

The 15 are vying for five spots to be announced in December. The winners will be formally inducted at a ceremony in New York on March 14.

In order to qualify for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an artist must have released their first single or album at least 25 years prior to their induction.

If they are not inducted I will be furious. The Rock and Roll hall of fame almost lose all their credibility these days.

Dr. John and Tom Waits should get in without even batting an eye lash but I mean it's the RnR Hall of Fame so nothing is certain. J Geils Band is also sweet but Hall of Fame? Well looking at some of these other names, I guess, why not.

Other than Michael Jackson, Madonna is the greatest pop star of our time

Don't go crying because "Rock and roll" is in the title, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and countless non-rock artists have been inducted

Prince and Bowie are better than both of them, plus they incorporated RAWK into their sound a lot better too

Ya know they should induct some of these guys before the crowd gets a little more competitive:

Alice in Chains is eligible in 2014, Pantera and Pearl Jam are eligible in 2015 and Tool, Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana are eligible in 2016...when did Soundgarden put out their first single?

I don't consider Bowie a pop star

And both MJ and Madonna incorporated rock numerous times (Beat It? Like A Prayer even had Prince on guitar)

"I don't consider Bowie a pop star"

Dur, what? It doesn't get much more pop than Bowie's 80s work. He most certainly is a pop musician, always has been.

As for the nominees, everyone sounds good except for Bon Jovi. I really wish the RNR Hall of Fame wouldn't just take RECORD SALES into consideration when judging a group, because no matter how many records Bon Jovi has sold they'll still always be mediocre at best. Everyone else deserves it though, so glad to see Donovan get acknowledged.
