i was STOKED after hearing the song they released, so i preordered the cd.
with shipping, it came out to be around $30, and the bastards fucked up so that i didnt get the cd for 2 weeks after it was released.

I found a copy of the censored version on Vimeo, though, and it sounded alright. Way better than the shit BFMV just put out. Album will probably be pretty good, especially if it sounds closer to CoE than any of their other albums.

Singer M. Shadows had this to say in an interview with Kerrang!:

Now, I did not hear any of that in this preview. I have to agree that it's average at best. And I really can't stand Shadows' voice at the end... I like his higher voice, but he fails at singing low. I really, really hope that the rest of the album is better than this - not because I really care about having something decent to listen to (since Soilwork's new album is coming out at around the same time anyway), but because it would be a shame for Mike Portnoy's talent to go to waste here.

On the contrary, I have to admit that I liked a lot of the last release, even though I've mostly grown out of it by now. While in general it didn't flow well, it had some good ideas. What they're putting out now is not a good idea. It's average, and what I'm hoping is that they're showing us the worst part of the new album so that the rest of it seems better by comparison.

And, yeah, idc what any of you say, City of Evil was their best record. STST was unbelievably bland. Waking the Fallen was also pretty uninteresting imo. These guys are definitely better when they use clean vocals. Shadows's metalcore vocals don't sound unique in the slightest, and instrumentally the band had improved w/ each album. (although, admittedly, i don't think that their last album has.... aged well.)

Screamed vocals in STST are horrible but I like them in WTF. He shouldn't have ditched them, he can still do them fairly well (check out their live performance of Second Heartbeat from their DVD).

Anyone else think Mike Portnoy's growls might find a way into this album?

They clearly arn't afraid to experiment, we have all learnt that. It totally doesn't work for them at all. That last album alienated loads of fans which resulted in a fan backlash.

Kinda like Celtic Frost's Cold Lake.

The main problem with the last album was that the experimentation was, in many cases, taken too far (here I would like to draw your attention to the ending of Unbound, The Wild Ride). But I honestly think they could have done a lot worse.

Pretty crap, but nothing about this band has ever intrigued me. The Rev seemed like really the only one with any talent and he's dead so there's no hope, even with Portnoy on the skins. Not to mention the lead singer needs to stop trying to hit those high notes because it sounds like an old man trying to sing while gargling.

I think if these guys would:

1) Cool it with the stupid stage names and image,
2) Remember how to write semi-challenging music,

Terrible, as with their entire last release. Waking the Fallen remains their best album and has passed the test of time. I've gotten over insulting them though, their producer probably asked them whether they wanted to make money. Once they said "Yes", they were done as far as musical credibility is concerned. Some bands sell out and still sound good.... these guys have not.

I remember reading an interview where the singer kept going on about how the music was more important than the money. Of course, that was before the self-titled came out...

WTF > COE > STST > Self-titled. Whether or not it sounds good is a matter of opinion (actually, it's fairly catchy to me), but I agree, it doesn't really suit them well, especially not after what they accomplished on City of Evil.
