British Music Industry Figures Up 2010-04-26 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 12 Comments | The British music industry has been buoyed by news, announced today, that income from music sales has grown for the first time in six years.
The unexpected news was revealed today by the British Phonographic Industry, the trade association that represents the music industry in the UK. Total income from sales has risen modestly from £916 million in 2008 to £929 million in 2009.
The increase captures two broad trends. CD sales have continued to decline, by 6% to £740 million, but for the first time the increase in income from digital sales has outstripped the decline, jumping a full 53% to £154 million.
The top-selling album of the year was Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream, which sold a staggering 6 million copies to become the fastest-selling debut album in history, more than 2 million of which were sold in the UK. Lady Gaga topped the singles chart with 'Poker Face.'

I suppose this is encouraging, I didn't know so much was still made from CD sales.
The less said about whats actually being bought the better though (SuBo)
| | | well this is good, hopefully it will keep going up
| | | CD sales still going down and yet HMV prices remain pretty inflated. How's that work?

CD sales still going down and yet HMV prices remain pretty inflated. How's that work?
It involves a bunch of guys in suits who don't actually listen to music thinking of ways they can get more money from you so that they can finally get that BMW with the cocaine caddy on the seatbelts.
HMV may be bad, but I'll wager FYE are still the worst when it comes to price gouging.
| | | beats expectations but i dont think anyone's going to be jumping for joy. Digital sales still less than 20% of the total? i wonder how that tallies up with how many are being pirated.
| | | HMV are worse than bad
| | | worse than that.
| | | good news i guess, although i'm all for getting music for free even if it's through "pirating."
| | | how does one pirate music?
| | | Well it's less of pirating and more like illegal livestock herding.
| | | The first financially positive news for music in ages it seems

how does one pirate music?
First you get a boat. Preferably of a sturdy wood and with good sails.
Then you take the sails down and adorn them with a jolly roger, which is a skull and crossbones.
Finally, you sail to the isles of music, and plunder their precious precious trade goods.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
