Is Hardcore way too violent? 2006-08-20 by Thor | 31 Comments | Jason Abbruzzese of Sentinel & Enterprise reports that the brawl that erupted last week after a hardcore punk-rock show at a church in Leominster, Massachusetts reportedly began as a fight in the mosh pit in front of the stage, where the band CUT THROAT was playing.
One of many?
The fight, which resulted in three arrests, is just another example in a long line of altercations at these types of concerts, according to Justin Prokowiew, 19, of Shirley, who said he and friends attended the show on August 12.
"I hear a lot of that kind of stuff happens at the shows," said Prokowiew, who also works at a local Newbury Comics. "[At] local shows, a lot of fights break out. It's pretty much just local kids getting into fights with other local kids they know. No strangers are doing it."
Other local area youths say that moshing is a big part of the local music scene for teenagers.
Shane Caron, 15, of Fitchburg said he feels that 15- to 20-year-olds tend to do the most moshing.
"That's like the major age range for moshing," said Caron, who said he mostly listens to punk and heavy metal. "It's usually just the atmosphere — mosh pits everywhere."
New genres of rock have emerged with similar qualities to predecessors of metal and punk but with an extreme edge.
One of the most recognized movements, punk-rock music known as "hardcore," is closely associated with violence.
Michelle Shaughnessy, 18, of Fitchburg, said the most intense violence can usually be found at hardcore shows.
"At real hardcore shows there's a lot of fights," said Shaughnessy.
She said she has see her fair share of mosh pit injuries, including being hit in the head with a bottle at last year's Locobazooka concert at the Fitchburg Municipal Airport. "People get messed up."

wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong
Local hardcore bands play around here all the time. If a kid gets knocked over in a pit, everyone around him helps pick him up.
Just cause the scenes in some places suck, that's no reason to trash an entire genre.

If a kid gets knocked over in a pit, everyone around him helps pick him up.
And that's the way it is here as well. Someone falls and there are like 3 people grabbing for him, that's the way it should be. People need to have fun at shows, not flaunt their egos around and prove how "hard" they are.

Hardcore comments pages are even angsty nowadays. /Exit
| | | Pfft. He talks about fighting in mosh pits and not once do I see Henry Rollins' name come up.
Honestly, it sounds like another old guy who's afraid of young people's angry music. This Message Edited On 08.21.06
| | | waste of finger energy, this is.
| | | hardcore is about as violent as a deer taking a shit in a flowery meadow
| | | Most moshpits I've been in haven't been very serious or violent, the most that happens is a big push or punch in the face (if you can't handle either, don't even bother coming). But occasionally there's some 7 foot lurching punk with steel toe boots who feels the need to kick the shit out of everybody.
| | | It's not the music which makes fights... it's the people.
'Tis all in good fun...
| | | You can't blame music for violence at shows.
| | | this article is bullshit. music dont cause fights. ppl cause fights.
i love hardcore, moshing is awsem tho a lil scary at times when a huge dude is leaping around ever and every1 is moving back trying to avoid getting kicked in the face.
no violence intended it jjust happens. so quit bitchin
| | | Total bias.
| | | this is BS, i know someone who goes to these shows and he says theres a consensus among most fans not to go extreme and actively hurt ppl and pick ppl up if they fall over
| | | I have bias journalling. This is way to under written and one sided.
Hardcore is more about the way you interpret and analyze, but don't exagerate and pressure your views.
goran
| | | Woah, you guys live in like pussyville or something because all the people at hardcore shows here are mean =(
| | | Total idiot. you can't blame the music for violence. shit happens.
| | | we are just normal kids trying to have fun listening to hardcore and that's it.

Yeah, hardcore is peaceful.
Woah, you guys live in like pussyville or something because all the people at hardcore shows here are mean =(
If some kid tries to tell me he is more hardcore than I am, I just run into a maturnity ward and punch a pregnant chick in the head and say, "If your kid thinks he is more hardcore than I am, I will catch his ass in bear trap." Hardcore is fun loving music.
| | | The genre shouldn't be attacked because of violence, you get violence anywhere, There are idiots in the world. If its not at a hardcore show they will do it somewhere else its not the music's fault
| | | dissapointed of Thor for posting this.
| | | Oh boy! Now I\'m scared. Fighting is usually not the outcome of a hardcore show. That is my unsensational real life experience. Anything to print some controversy............by the way, I once witnessed fans of Pantera tossing nuts and bolts randomly into a crowd of other Pantera fans at one of thier concerts. Then, years later I saw on the news that Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a disgruntled fan. Now that\'s what I call violent and hard core! Ever since that Dimebag incident, the bar has been raised and I can only get excited about the Postal Core Music scene. This Message Edited On 08.25.06This Message Edited On 08.25.06
| | | read the comments thinking they were from an era long forgotten.
somehow managed to be right.
| | | Absolute Horseshit. REAL hardcore has always been anti violence at shows. And youre more likely to be helped out at hardcore shows than anywhere else. Jesus, this is like some Geraldo/Donahue hyperbole BS from the 90s.
| | | actually it's from 2006
| | | did not expect my hometown to make a Sput news article
or for someone to bump an 11-year-old piece
but I guess tonight is full of surprises
| | | fully support kicking people in the face who take ipads to shows tho
| | | This is so stupid.
| | | I've been to many shows, and anytime there was a issue or fight in the pit/crowd it was usually just one or two really drunk assholes that took things too far
It's a shame incidents like these shape the perception of hardcore shows
| | | well it was a shame 11 years ago
