Thrice plans double double LPs

2006-07-28 by 204409 EMERITUS | 30 Comments
With a triple album already released this year, Thrice has decided to raise the bar further, and recently spoke to MTV about releasing four albums in 2007.
Frontman (and current solo artist) Dustin Kensrue already promised "the most ambitious thing we've undertaken artistically" but went further, saying:
"There's going to be four discs, and they will each be themed differently," Kensrue said. "It will be a large body of music — maybe around 25 songs or so. I've never been a fan of double albums; I'm a fan of shorter records. This will kind of be just multiple, shorter records, and each one will be self-sufficient. "
But also, they all tie into each other. We have a lot of bass material written for it, and we're kind of at this point where we have the core parts of the songs written, and we've been getting together and trying to flesh those out.
Kensrue's solo album will be out in October on a "big indie label" and the new double double (or more concisely, double²) album will follow 2005's Vheissu.

My brother will probably pick this up. He loves these guys. I don't own any of their albums but I think they are a good band.

Wait, they released a triple album earlier this year? Where was I when this happened?
I love Thrice.

No, they meant someone else already released a triple album (The Early November) and that Thrice are gonna one-up them.

This could be awesome, but it just as easily could suck.

Oh, ok. I read that wrong. I just hope this isn't filler-laden, but that would be a tad bit difficult to make 4 albums in one year without a decent amount of the music being filler.

I really hope that their ideas follow more along the lines of TAINA and Identity Crisis rather than Vheissu. I honestly thought that album was garbage.

Wow, they are sure putting quantity over quality (not that any of their records have much of that).

This could be a fantastic album (and I don't even like Thrice), or it could be the biggest mistake any band has ever made. Plenty of far more seasoned bands have attempted and failed (depending on whom you ask) at a double-album.This Message Edited On 07.29.06

I could see this if they hadn't released an album for a few years and Kensrue wasn't writing solo stuff as well, but with a release last year and Kensrue focusing on solo material this really is scary.

woahzorz, omigosh, hoolyyy heelllll.
I hope they don't continue too far in the "artistic," kind of epic vein or whatever that Vheissu had.
Whatever the case, though, I can't freaking wait. I'm also really looking forward to Dustin's solo album.

*whistle* Wow! Four albums? What are they gonna be like an album trilogy thing or are they trying to stick with the progressive stuff.

I'm excited. I don't care if they go the same direction as Vheissu or not. I love that album and thier old stuff.

thats friggin nuts man. i doubt that all of it will be really quality stuff all the way through seeing as how they are planning on having about 25 songs. but I bet it will grab some attention and probably even some record sales cause releasing two double albums in one year has never been done before.

Dustin's solo is acoustic. He has originals but some of his best tracks are covers of Thrice's "Madman," Pedro the Lion's "THe Secret of Easy Yoke" (I think that's the title), Counting Crows' "Round Here" and Radiohead's "Creep."

So, get me right. 4 Discs?

With only 25 songs between them, Island had best be putting them out as a full package, and not be selling them separately at full prices to make the most money. Hmm

Holy shit. These will either be the best album(s) they ever did or the biggest mistake Thrice ever made... that is a LOT of material and no band yet has been able to maintain that kind of consistency. Anyone remember Prince's Emancipation? No, I didn't think so. But if anyone can do it, it's certainly Thrice... either way, I'm psyched.

GOD THRICE IS FUCKING CRAZY.

These guys are the most ambitous songwriters and I love it how they put out record after record. Awesome!

I wonder what they mean by "themed differently"?

This could mean four different styles of music, maybe like the hardcore stuff of Illusion of Safety and the the more prog side of Vheissu?

Nah, probably lyrically themed in a story of some sorts. Vheissu touched on a theme with "Hold Fast Hope" and "Red Sky" having heavy imagery of a boat and/or a voyage of some sort. Not to mention the extremely Christain tinge that Vheissu took.
