Alright. You can't just pick a side because you're a Radiohead fan. Smith makes a valid point. Although I don't believe the pay-what-you-want method is the same as file-sharing, it doesn't do anything but attempt to give Radiohead credibility. They didn't do it for the fans, they did it because they were free of a label and they didn't need the sales to pay for their tour. The Editors on the other hand obviously need sales to recoup expenses, and rightfully see this as a threat to the DIY ethics of up and coming bands. It's like if the most popular girl in school started giving away ipods. We also can't hate the man because his last name is the same as a more well-known musician, one who now looks like a parody of himself.

I'm not picking sides just because I'm a Radiohead fan. His argument is just weak. His reasoning for why downloading is wrong (that it stops people from listening to full albums) is flawed, as I showed in my previous post. It's pretty clear that he is only using that line of argument because he doesn't want to look like a sell-out and complain about lack of money and sales. For your complaint that Radiohead only gave their album away for "credibility" (and not for the fans, which is dubious), I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the fact that Smith is doing the exact same thing, only in his case it is much more obvious.

I also don't get how giving away your album HURTS DIY ethics. Isn't that like the opposite? All the bands I listen to that promote DIY ethics (Men as Trees, Relics etc.) literally give their shit away for free or charge tiny amounts for it ($7 for a homemade Relics T-shirt? MaT's full discography is free on their site.) I would argue (as would most on this site, I'm assuming) that if it wasn't for file-sharing I would not have heard of 99% of the bands I currently love.
