Best Voices In Indie Rock

2009-09-09 by fromtheinside | 52 Comments
PASTE magazine have released an article rating the 10 best in voices in the Indie Rock scene; alongside with IMEEM which has a sponsored play list based on the article including each artists "best" vocal performance.

10.Mark Kozelek - "There’s no one I’d rather have sing me to sleep."

9.Gillian Welch - "Welch has got so much spirit, and a voice as rich as the Appalachia clay."

8.Jonsi Birgisson - "Nobody knows what he's saying, and nobody cares. That ethereal sound is enough."

7.Jim James - "James has a high, lonesome warble that sounds best slathered in cavernous reverb. He also has surprising range and a lot in common with Marvin Gaye's vocal style."

6.Neko Case - "Her bright and boomy voice could fill an airport hangar."

5.Thom Yorke - "Yorke’s unmistakable tenor is strong when it needs to be and fragile when it needs to be. And how about that falsetto?"

4.Sally Ellyson - "Ellyson’s voice is the very essence of pretty."

3.Antony Hegarty - "How can so much heartbreak exist in one man’s voice?"

2.Chan Marshall - "Once a shambling indie-rocker, she’s now a dusky soul queen."

1.Brandi Carlile - "Carlile sings from the bottom of her gut. Her voice rises and falls, cracks and warbles with a disarming intensity."

7, I think, is My Morning Jacket. But I've never listened to them so I couldn't judge. But from what I see, list is silly.

If Radiohead can be called Indie-Rock then so can The Smiths.

And that should mean that Morrissey should be at number 1

the list is a little strange, seems to be leaning more towards folk-style singers with gillian welch and neko case. i have no idea how you can call brandi carlile an indie rocker.

Niceinvader
September 14th 2009

Thanks guys, i'm aware they aren't "indie" but they are not mainstream which makes them more indie then radiohead and neko case. The only reason they aren't indie is because they got stuck with a contract, which they finished with octahedron. So in essence, under omar's label they are indie.
