Metal Hammer Rebuts Underoath

2009-06-20 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 86 Comments
Earlier this week, Underoath guitarist Timothy McTague posted a blog claiming that an article in UK publication Metal Hammer, in which he appeared to speak derisively of Avenged Sevenfold, paraphrased and quoted his words out of context.

Metal Hammer quotes McTague: "People might associate us with Avenged Sevenfold because they’re pissed republicans and ‘so metal’, but they’re a gimmick, they’re a circus. They can play but they can’t write songs. What’s worse is the way they look. If you need to have make-up and crappy names like Synyster Gates to sell records, then you shouldn’t be here. That’s not rock’n’roll to me. Arena rock maybe, but not real rock’n’roll.

"If you’re basing yourself on how cool you are or how many girls you can trick into thinking your band is cool you can just… take that home. I’m not saying that’s what Avenged Sevenfold do, but they do a lot of crap that makes me think, ‘that’s why you and us will never be the same’. At the same time, we don’t write a really heavy record ‘just to show all those Avenged Sevenfold fans what real metal is like’"

The article originally quoted McTague with the words "they can't play and they can't write songs," however this has since been amended to read "they can play but they can't write songs."

The folks at Metal Hammer has provided a full mp3 of the conversation so that interested parties can decide for themselves whether McTague has been unfairly treated.

"I'm not saying that's what Avenged does" - well yeah, they don't. I sure as hell don't listen to them because they have cool names.

And is it me, or did Tim start every sentence saying what he's not doing/what doesn't like? Sorta weird.

Mctague actually makes some good points, especially about the unbelievably overrated Metallica and Dragonforce, but he seems to be extremely close minded when it comes to music. I mean, he plays in a Screamo band for goodness sake! I mean, while I love Underoath, it's not technically the most impressive and high end music out there.

shredzilla, that's the stupidest statement i've hever heard.

for one, if Underoath were actual screamo, they wouldn't be near as popular as they are now.

secondly, UO might not shred as much as A7X, but their songwriting is light years ahead of them.

thirdly, I wish this would stop. It's getting old. We all the know the members of UO, with the exception of Spencer, are all complete pretentious pricks. We also know that A7X haven't done anything worthwhile since Waking the Fallen (which I really need to re-rate) and that their image is so incredibly gimmicky that its hard to take them seriously.

I deny Underoath having greater songwriting than A7X. That's just false, well, up until self titled anywho.

not false at all. define the great line and lost in the sound of seperation mixes metalcore with elements of post-hardcore and post-rock and does it incredibly well.

build ups in too bright to see, too loud to hear and casting such a thin shadow are epic as hell, and they've always been pretty experimental with song structures.

i agree with myhighpie, also the only survivor was miraculously unharmed has such a a pretty intro, the only thing worth saving from late a7x could only be "a little pice of heaven" and its not cos its that good but cos it is the only time you actually see them aspiring for something more than just musical average-ness

Underoath's new sound is hardly original and more of a smash my head into the wall borefest than I'd care for. To me anyways, I just dig their other shit, specifically their worst album and TCOT. Still, I'll always pick A7X over Underoath not because i'm anti-religious and furious but because of enjoyment factor.

I love both Underoath and Avenged Sevenfold. I grew up listening and trying to learn both songs. There both decent song writers. If your gonna start labeling a band because they dont appeal to you then your just ignorant.

And by technically and impressive, there are alot of bands out there that dont get the credit they deserve. Between The Buried and Me, Protest The Hero, Psyopus, Cephalic Carnage, Ion Dissonance, just to name a small few. They all scrutinize all of there songwriting to the nearest detail. Something that either ax7 or underoath do. Example. Use of repetitive power chords in similar keys. You know Underoath last two albums sounded exactly the same. There both cool as shit, but to call it anything totally groundbreaking would be just foolish. And for avenged sevenfold, im not saying there songs are the easiest to play in the book, but they lack alot of originality, at least agree with me there.

Start listening to music that dont base there sound on songs. Listen to stuff that you can relate today as modern day composers, where the songs don't follow the same structure, and where artists are trying to be more creative. You'd be surprised what you would find.

Well well well.

1. Name one band that came before Underoath that sound like them.
2. Dallas or Spencer, either of those vocalists make A7X look like crap.
3. Lyrics, no comparison.
4. "Hey guys, you can shred pretty good, let's base our sound around good philharmonics and repetitive song structures." (Speculated quote)
5. Underoath...just Underoath. Honestly lol. Can't beat them.

"hypocritical much?

No, I don't think what I said is hypocritical. I like anything from Death Metal to Jazz to stuff like the Beatles. His views seem to be that if you can actually play your instrument well, then your automatically not a good band. He seems quite stuck on the Punk genre in general.

"Umm, Underoath's a metalcore band sweetheart."

Meh....I'll just call em' Hardcore. They're hardly Metalcore in my book.

did i mention the normal/casual observer? 95% of the people who hear an artist screaming in their music will consider that band a screamo or goth/metal band. they won't think 'hmm this is some interesting melodic hardcore', or 'wow, this post-punk is really pleasing to my ears'.

the majority of people don't give a shit about super-specific sub-genres, because they really do nothing but confuse. people will think in terms of rock, pop, punk, country, classical, alternative, etc.
