Underoath confront MetalHammer

2009-06-18 by Douglas | 55 Comments
After a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Tim from Underoath was paraphrased saying that he doubted Avenged Sevenfolds muscianship. Tim denies that he even said the comments and apologized to A7X in a recent media release.

I’m writing this in response to my Metal Hammer paraphrasing in a recent online article. There’s obviously a fine line between being honest and careful when it comes to interviews. This is often a very severe impasse for me based on the fact that at times I find myself holding back, rather than just being able to have an open discussion of ideas. If I were to read just what has been posted, not knowing the context of the conversation, I would think the person who said that was one of the most-rude people to ever speak publicly. What was in fact a very well rounded music conversation, turned into a very public bash. Most people who know me know that although I am very opinionated about certain issues, especially regarding music, I have never intentionally or publicly ridiculed any band. What was posted was a collection of just 10 sentences from an entire 30-minute interview in which I stated my personal opinions about certain ideals pertaining to our scene/genre. I’d also like to clarify that some things I am quoted saying were in fact never even said. All things that were indeed stated were said by me alone. The interview was prefaced with the idea that this story was to be about music and only music. Leave your faith and everything else at the door, let’s just talk music. Music is the most powerful, influential force in potentially all of creation. I have seen it change lives before my eyes. Throughout the course of our career we have been confronted with many different issues. Bands go through image changes, ideal changes, and musical changes. This is a natural, and needed progression in order for music and musicians to progress. Whether you are pushing for reformation of anything from gay rights, religious beliefs, straight-edge, animal rights, etc., as an influential community we must take our responsibility for activism and progress as a charge.

I have no ill-will with Avenged Sevenfold, Escape the Fate or Metallica. Underoath just wrapped a tour with E.T.F. and we’ve all grown to like those dudes as a lot. I don’t know anyone from Avenged or Metallica, but I have no doubt they’re all good people.

Regardless of what it was made to look like, I wasn’t intending to start any issues between bands or arbitrarily bash any artists. Many people don’t like my band. To me, this scene is about positivity and making a difference in the world. I want my kids listening to Thursday talk about equality, or P.O.S. talk about injustice, or Thrice talk about getting involved in your local charity.

Tim

Its pretty loose if an article falls that far from an interview that you have to come out publicly just to correct inaccuracies. Interviews shouldn't be paraphrased anyway.

I occasionally pick up Metal Hammer to catch some up and coming Brit bands. Found Bring Me The Horizon that way, but do not find this very surprising. He probably did take some shots at A7X that were taken out of context.

If I remember rightly, there was something about the interviewer winding him up a little as well.

But Underoath are cool, despite their tendency to preach at concerts.

I'm still pretty sure the members of Metallica are all greedy, self-obsessed pricks who don't give 2 shits about their music or their legacy and only care about how much money they can get from Napster.

i find this hilarious. underoath owns A7X and metallica for creativity and just overall coolness. matt shadows sucks at singing and life and lars holds metallica back so much it's not even funny. example you say? ST ANGER. when that album is uttered from the lips of children old ppl die.

i like it when christian bands preach atleast they have a reason to be up there. A7X although decent live, just worry about chicks after the show. i had an old friend hangout with them backstage and she said there were nothing but strippers with fake huge goombas.

fake boobs=fail

yes, A7X is filled with retards. M. Shadows is unbelievably inarticulate, syn and zac know better than to try to pretend to be smart.
johnny's kinda gay.

the rev's pretty sweet though. shame he's stuck with the rest of the band...

Something similar happened like this between Guitar World and Flyleaf about 2 years ago. They also had to publicly come out and correct many of the things that was said in an interview, which was also paraphrased as insults to other bands. It's weird this often happens to Christian bands. Even though I do not like Flyleaf, something was odd about that and something is indeed odd about this. I'm not screaming "discrimination!" but I think something is definitely going on behind the scenes.

What was the correct context, what was the perceived context, and what is the difference in meaning that these 'morons' so ignorantly extracted?

I'm a huge fan of Underoath, Avenged Sevenfold, and Escape the Fate, I'm not too big on Metallica, but hey, everyone's different. While I really, really love Underoath, Avenged Sevenfold just produces masterpieces. I don't care what they care about after a show. If they want to fuck a stripper, who am I to say no? When you take just the music into consideration, Avenged Sevenfold is much more talented, in my opinion. It's very difficult to be more talented the Underoath, Avenged Sevenfold is just one of few who is.

HAHAHA i'm laughing so hard at oilerfan. sorry dude, haha i mean i have Define the Great Line at a 5, but i'd say talent wise, they don't crack the top 35% of bands out there. start listening to more music is all i can say.

Gold on two, I believe. Could be wrong, but I know for certain that 'Define The Great Line' went Gold.

Moot point anyways, though. Sales =/= talent, as 3OH!3 and LMFAO prove time and time again.

And as a personal opinion, I'd say 'Define...'-on Underoath is a better band than 'A7X'-on Avenged Sevenfold. 'City of Evil' is about equal to 'They're Only Chasing Safety', and A7X up to 'Waking The Fallen' was better than Underoath up to 'The Changing of Times'. Again...my opinion.
