Bon Iver Tease New Album, Two New Songs

2019-06-03 by Rowan5215 STAFF | 42 Comments
UPDATE: The teasing wasn't in vain as both "Hey, Ma" and "U (Man Like)" have been released to Spotify and YouTube. See both below and read the original news article for context on their release.

"Hey, Ma":

"U (Man Like)":

After bits and pieces of information leaking out throughout this year that the Bon Iver project was recording new music - including a post from manager Brad Cook indicating activity in Texas, and a drunken Justin Vernon instagram video seemingly streaming new music - we appear to be on the edge of a crispy realisation. Live at All Points East last night, Vernon confirmed the existence of new music in some form, with two new songs played to accompany it. The first song, "Hey Ma", has been sporadically performed throughout the last year since being written in Vernon's collaboration with the Come Through dance project, while the second song "U" appears to be entirely new. Hear both below.

"Hey Ma":

"U":

That's not all, as a mysterious website likely related to the upcoming project has launched today. Past the slightly surreal drawings and animations on the icommai.com/ site, it lists what could potentially be working titles for an album of 12 songs, as well as a lineup of collaborators including Bryce Dessner of The National, Bruce Hornsby, Moses Sumney and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, among others. No release date or full name has yet been indicated, but posts on the site dating back to May suggest this is a project well into the development stage.

The potential tracklist for a new album (as yet unconfirmed/speculation):

01. 1994?FredandPuckett
02. Randy Pixel
03. Ma
04. Callie Lan
05. Worm Crew
06. Chet
07. Good Computer Screen 00
08. ------
09. Bun
10. Voyage to Next
11. U
12. o o

U (Man Like) is beautiful, I only wish it was longer! Hey Ma seems like a good branch between 22, A Million and the self-titled. I wonder which one is gonna be more representative of the (potential) overall new album.

Hey Ma is frickin beautiful! Kinda nice to hear him singing without heavy autotune again. This sounds like it will be quite different from 22 a million. More stripped-down, raw. I fucc widdit

Yeah, last album sucked hard. Hopefully he makes some real songs this time. That tracklist isn't too promising though.

22 A Million was his best album yet, hopefully this is even better. Singles aren't as good as 22's singles but they're still great

I like Hey Ma, the second not so much, too EltonJohnish for me.

Wish he would go back to guitar and make stuff like Perth again.
