Obfuscation is talking about people on his Facebook, guys, which is understandable - it's easier to make a quip about Amy Winehouse than say something meaningful about what happened in Norway.

The news outlets are by far covering the Norway events much more heavily than Amy Winehouse, so they do have their priorities in order... still shitty that she never got back on her feet and it ended this way, though.

christ you're such a cunt. it doesn't matter what somebody contributed to society, a life is a life. she was a talented singer who lived a drug-ridden, sad life. she wasn't a murderer, nor was she in anyway an inherently bad person, she just had a drug problem. i suppose the death of homeless alcoholics and those living on welfare are also irrelevant seeing as they aren't "productive members of society". it's ok to not like her, I don't even like her, but it's incredibly disrespectful and pathetic to write the shit you're writing on an article about her death. keep it to yourself.

i really think the 27 thing is brought up way too much though... we are just more likely to notice that an artist died at 27 because we've been told about the curse...

there are plenty of up and coming musicians/young stars that have died at other ages, but the moment one dies at 27 it becomes an "add them to the list" kind of thing

Dude, I can't say RIP every bloody second for every single person that dies. You know man, it's life, and people die. It's just, not many people get recognized, and when they die only their friends and family care. I never cared for Winehouse, nor did I think she was all that great of a person. But, I still respect her, and it's still sad her life is gone. There are billions of people out there, many of whom are better people and live more honest lives than Winehouse. Well all have our demons to face, though, hers were drugs and alcohol. Other people face depression and suicidal tendencies, others have anger, others are addicted to sex because they feel as if it's the only worth people get out of them, others face disease, others are insane, some people murder, everyone lies, everyone cheats, and everyone sins. Life is one massive, sad, progression towards death for all of us. Just because someone may have had struggles in their life doesn't mean that they don't deserve respect. Get off of your pedestal and at least understand that this is a life, and it's a life lost. We all deserve death, no matter how good of people we are or aren't...

HipsterHolocaust, thanks for proving my theory that anyone who uses the term "sheep" when talking about people is inherently awful. You say you could care less about Amy Winhouse, yet here you are. And did you ever think that, while I'm busy mourning the 90-some people who died in Norway, I can make room for one more person who died young?

Anyway, I wasn't a huge fan, but I did enjoy her stuff I happened to hear. The worst part of this is the fact that is ISN'T shocking. Because it's been expected, I (and many other people) have been waiting for this news for about 3 years now. So for three years the world has slowly been watching this young woman fall into oblivion. And I had forgotten until today that she was only 27, because she's aged so much in the last few years. Addiction is such an ugly thing, and it's too bad she couldn't beat it.

Posting that opinion like the childish little assholes that seem to come out of the woodwork for these kinds of news posts is.

--but Mods only do something when THEY think it's right.--

I have opinions on Amy, her music and drug users in general, but none of them are positive so I keep it to myself because I know this isn't the proper venue. That's what people do when they get all growed up... you'll see one day, hopefully. So stop with your bullshit.

Also, the Norway thing is tragic but that isn't what this news post is about so why would anyone expect that it should be the default topic here? If you want to talk about Norway, find a fucking news article on it. CNN lets you post comments too, go there.

I wish people knew more about her music and less about her personal life. I am very sad about this as her music was something that I could really connect with. She had such an amazing voice, her lyrics were "street", and she was sexy as hell. RIP Ms. Winehouse.

While I understand that it's sad that she died (as it is when anyone dies), it is not tragic or shocking or surprising when someone who is notorious for drug and alcohol abuse dies.

Her problems were well documented and she refused to help herself. When someone refuses to change a negative behavior or practice as dangerous as her's then it's inevitable that they will eventually suffer the consequences. This is not a tragedy, its what happens.

Unless of course she didn't die of an OD like every rational person in the world suspects, and it was somehow a homicide, in which case I'll look like a true asshole. I'll take my chances though...

Just a thought, and regardless, RIP.

I'll go in a logical flowchart (minus the chart) method.
You said "no one's offered you drugs before" => implies that the person (who is presumably clean based on his high horse [whoo alliteration] attitude) is only clean because no one has offered him => seems to imply this person is not clean due to strength of character.

I always see someone who does drugs as a character flaw, just like being arrogant & other things. Thus, I see it as a character strength if someone is clean, and you cheapen it by saying said person is only clean due to circumstance

balcaen
July 25th 2011

it's still a false dilemma, not all drug users go into a downwards spiral and many of them successfully stay clean after getting over their addiction. it isn't that she did drugs that she ruined her life, it was that she was irresponsible with them.

@Fort23, maybe, maybe not. I guess from an oversimplified point of view, yeah it's possible.
But then again, assuming any given person didn't put themselves in the position to avoid ever using in the first place cheapens their character. My friend (and neighbor)'s brother (who is obviously also my neighbor and friend but he's a grade older) was a weed user (and dealer) I believe. I don't believe he was ever personally offered drugs, but that's only because he avoided any situation where it'd happen. (He ended up getting caught by his parents and is clean now, I think.)

most comments here are just disgraceful. but not only here, not only on facebook. it's astonishing that even people who aren't hiding behind their PCs aren't afraid to show how harsh and disrespectful they are. there's a serious lack of empathy guided by fear, fear and more fear. fine, so she was a weak crackhead with no will to live, despite having wealth, fame and talent (which automatically makes her more responsible than say... a starving kid in Africa) and you know with absolute certainty that if it was your brother, sister or even YOU, the outcome would be different? well done, you are superior. however, once again you've failed to see the bigger picture.

Well look at it this way, she's been sober for over 24 hours for the first time in her life ;)

And I don't see why it's so bad that there are jokes about her. Not everybody loved her music (I know I didn't), and her drug addictions had become a running joke even when she was alive. People need to grow a pair and stop getting so tight-wound over some jokes. Fact is, the most f****d up jokes are the funniest.

And yeah, the bombings were important, but this is primarily a music site. Can't really make deviations all the time, no matter how bad the events. If you want to comment on the bombings, go to a news site.

putting down others for being human may make you feel better and superior about yourselves....but you are not. you're just showing the ignorance you are tied to and trapped in

how superior is that? you have never taken drugs? well, good for you, i guess. but you get no credit for it and it doesn't make you shit but someone who doesn't do drugs. hell dudes, most of us don't do drugs. so get off the high horse

The point of those comments (at least from me) was not to state my superiority over her.
At the end of the day, her drug use (and refusal to get help) caused her life to end prematurely (and obviously this is sad news, don't get me wrong. RIP again). And when you consider how defiant she was about it (just check her song), it's just sad that she threw it all away.

It has absolutely nothing to do with feeling superior to her or anyone similar to her.

Personally this really didn't bother me a bit. I didn't think her music was anything special and she seemed a bit like an attention whore. Plus if she was going to struggle all her life with alcohol and drugs, then maybe it was for the best she died young instead of living a miserable life.

During my days in the Hellenic Army as a soldier, I knew a colleague of mine who was crazy with Amy Winehouse.

The guy was literally brain washing me EVERY SINGLE DAY about how big Winehouse would be in the music business.

I'm sad for her death, as i would be sad for any person leaving this world, but I'm more sad about that friend of mine, who was a great fan of her work.

I can't quite figure out how her family didn't stop her from going under.....

Her parents should had tied her in a bed or something for like six months or a year feeding her properly, until she would get clean and sober....

It is simply beyond me and i don't quite buy her family's post-mortem regret.

They should had acted before the fire went out of control...

That's what parents/family are for.
