Vibe Magazine Folds

2009-07-01 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 15 Comments
Troubled rap monthly Vibe magazine will shut its doors with immediate effect, citing its failure to "restructure the huge debt on our small company.”

Vibe Media Group chief Steve Aaron broke the news to staff via an internal memo, which was of course immediately leaked to the press. He wrote: "The print advertising collapse hit Vibe hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business."

While one has to expect that Vibe heads explored all options available to them, they appear to have overlooked the obvious: attempting to sell the business back to founder Quincy Jones. The past week has been particularly painful for the legendary record producer, who has also had to suffer the death of his protege Michael Jackson.

Jones has vowed to buy back the magazine and re-launch it as a web-only publication: "Print and all that stuff is over, we gotta remember that. The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Miami Herald. They’re over the same way as the record business. We have got to get into this century."

2009 has already seen the death of pop magazine Blender as a printed entity, while one of the two remaining hip hop publications- The Source- was only rescued from bankruptcy last year.

If they allowed people to buy this with EBT cards, it'd sell millions.

Most print publications are going to die out in the near future, newspapers will most likely survive but web-based content is so much more IN VOGUE

^^^ I hope this doesn't prove to be the case. I NEED my monthly Metal Hammer! Their website blows big time. Plus, you can't take a laptop onto the crapper with you.
