American Idiot: The Musical

2009-03-30 by Phantom | 36 Comments
As well as finishing putting together their new album 21st Century Breakdown, Californian rockers Green Day have confirmed that their plans to turn their recent, multi-milion selling, concept album American Idiot into a musical will be going ahead.

The musical's preliminary run is planned to open this September at the Berkley Repertory Theatre in the band's home state. If the intial run of shows in Berkley prove to be a success, the futher plans of a Broadway production look likely to happen.

The musical is a collaboration between band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, Mike Dirnt and musical director Michael Mayer, whose hit musical Spring Awakening opened in London recently.

The initial development of the project was started when Mayer approached Green Day and inquired about the possibility of turning the album into a musical, and after a series of workshops throughout 2008, the band gave their permission for a full-scale production.

Mayer said: "It was very much in my head all that time (during Spring Awakening). Sometimes I really would say things like, "Why can’t this have a groove like 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams'?""

In an interview with the New York Times, Billie Joe Armstrong had this to say about the forthcoming venture: "It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that’s what I love about it. When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream."

I'm not really bothered about this either way. Just thought I'd post it for those who might want to know.

It was more a question mark of disbelief, but I see what you mean so I've changed it.

Album was great, but I don't think this will be very good.
I would've preferred a movie.

I wonder if the cast is required to wear eye-liner and red ties. Green Day= Official Toolbags.

If that Mayer guy often wondered why what he was producing couldn't have a groove like Boulevard of Broken Dreams, I have no doubt the majority of his other work is pretty mediocre.

As a Bay Area native, I just might go see this before it either A) Moves to Broadway or B) Sinks away into oblivion.

Shouldn't they have done this a year or two ago in between albums, rather then when a new LP is about to come out?

I just can't help thinking songs like 'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are screaming out to be put on stage.

Hopefully the musical doesn't out shadow the success of the album and turn it into some modern day "Tommy" fiasco. As for the new album track listing....it's like one hit of a crack pipe on this end.

Definitely won't be seeing this show on broadway. I hope it never happens. When I get my time machine up and running again, i'm going to convince "Billie Joe" to stop making music after shenanigans.
