My Chemical Romance will return to the studio this week to begin work on their as yet untitled fourth album. After a gruelling schedule, 2008 saw the band take a break. In the most part Gerard Way used the opportunity to complete the second series of his comic [The Umbrella Academy] while guitarist Frank Lero recorded with side-project Leathermouth.

The Black Parade saw the New Jersey fivesome decked out in military garb and experiment with a widescreen punk sound. "We haven't chosen a path yet," concedes Way of the new material already penned. "It's all over the map in terms of what's there." "It's going to be less layered than Black Parade - I do expect it to be a little more raw. "

Unlike its predecessor the band's next record - expected in late 2009 - will be put together in deliberately urgent fashion. "I'm hoping for something to happen in a very fast way, that feels very natural and that doesn't have a lot of noodling all over it. That's the goal, to get in there and have this rapid and visceral recording experience. To tour on it almost right away on it would be fun and not kind of drag it out like last time. This time there won't be any procrastinating."

"I'm not the same person to when I made the first record, second or Black Parade," he emphasises. "Black Parade was three years ago. You change a lot in three years. If I try to write more music like that I'd be doing people a disservice. There may be some people that's just what they want but I don't think our fans do. We have to make a record that reflects how we've matured." As far as the group is concerned change isn't an option then, but a necessity. "If we keep making a copy of the same record it's going to be no good for anybody. We have to change. You hope that they [the fans] come along with you but they may not and you have to take the chance."

The Black Parade was decent, hopefully they'll improve on it.

I do expect it to be a little more raw.

Translation: shitty harsh vocals.
Now all we have to wait for is them to say, "We want to go with a more progressive album," (acoustic guitars and synths) and follow that up with, "We're getting back to our roots," (awful aping of their old albums in an attempt to please crybaby fans) and we'll have rounded out the cliches.

Actually, I like the sound of this a little bit. My main problem with the Black Parade (apart from the endless plaigarism) was the crazy over-production. It was almost as if every song took itself too seriously or tried too hard (well, not every song, but most of them) while constraining itself within the realm of popular appeal. If this comes naturally to them, that would probably get rid of that problem, but who knows. Could just be an idle suggestion.

From the thoughts on the new Iero side-project around here, they better keep young Frank on a short leash!

I don't know why, but I liked how over-the-top theatrical the Black Parade was. Looking forward to this.

I love The Black Parade but really find it hard to stomach the rest of their discography. I'm not predicting I'm going to like this. Less layering, less noodling, less epic? Sounds like a pass for me.

This is so they can hear the new green day album and then just rip it off and put 'MCR' on the cover.

I very much like The Black Parade, although I think that this will be something of a step back. From the sounds of it, they seem to be going back to the Three Cheers sound, which was pretty bad. Hopefully they can put out something really good, we'll have to see.

Who are you trying to convince by throwing the term emo around like you actually know what you're talking about?

Emo fangirls... the world could use alot less of them. Hopefully MCR knows how idiotic and annoying their fans really are and will change to repel them. I shurley hope that this band won't end up like Linkin Park did after they "matured" their sound.

I am assuming they are just going to try to sound like a watered down version of 80s punk. Especially when going by the Bob Dylan cover they did.

the black parade was so overproduced and overhyped, but i doubt this will be anymore original. i wonder how this whole "raw and visceral" thing will play out with their emo kings image.

imo The Black Parade was their worst album. Hopefully, by "raw" it will be like IBYMB,YBMYL, clearly their best.
