Page: No Plant, No Led Zeppelin 2008-11-14 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 22 Comments | Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has hinted that the band may have to adopt a new name if they decide to tour without singer Robert Plant.
While the three surviving members have performed on several occasions under the Led Zeppelin name without original drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980, but with Plant unwilling to sign on to a full tour, a name change would be in order were they to continue with a different singer.
A rep for Page was quoted: ""Whatever this is, it is not Led Zeppelin. Not without the involvement of Robert Plant."
There is precedent for such an occurrence. Since 20002, former members of Zeppelin contemporaries the Doors have toured also without the original singer (Jim Morrison, deceased) and drummer John Densmore. Densmore and the Morrison estate successfully sued his former band mates, who were at the time touring with Ian Astbury of the Cult, requiring them to adopt the less incendiary moniker Riders On The Storm.
Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, filling in for his father, have held rehearsals with a number of singers old and new in a bid to revive the tour idea, with Steven Tyler (according to Rolling Stone, the audition did not go well) and Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy in the frame. Chris Cornell, ex- of Soundgarden, has already ruled himself out of contention.
