Coldplay have been declared the biggest-selling act of 2008 at the World Music Awards in Monaco.

The band picked up the prize – along with the Rock Act Of The Year award – after their current album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends topped charts around the globe.

Other winners at the sales based awards included Leona Lewis for Best Pop Female – and Best New Artist, reports BBC News.

Amy Winehouse was the winner in the Female Pop/Rock award, while Alicia Keys was named best in the R&B category. Lil’ Wayne bagged the Hip-Hop/Rap Artist award, while Akon was declared the Biggest Internet Artist Of The Year.

Performing at the ceremony, Beyonce won an Outstanding Contribution To The Arts Award and Mariah Carey won the Special Achievement Prize.

Ringo Starr picked up a Diamond Award on behalf of The Beatles, which recognises artists whom, according to International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, have sold more than 100 million albums.

I'm proud to say I did not contribute to them winning this award.

Bland, uninspired poop.

I can see why the band is the best selling act of the year. The album is not as good as i first thought, but its better than some of the crap they have released before.

^^^ What he said. "Viva La Vida..." is definitely one of my favorite releases of the year, and perhaps the biggest surprise for me.

I was surprised too, until I heard Viva La Vida... Its their best, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan.
