Mastodon Reveal New Album

2008-10-29 by BallsToTheWall | 47 Comments
Atlanta-based heavy-rock behemoth Mastodon have confirmed details behind their upcoming Reprise Records album scheduled for release in early 2009. The seven-song, 50-minute effort will be entitled Crack the Skye; it was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta and produced/mixed by Brendan O'Brien (Rage Against the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, etc.). Crack the Skye follows the critically acclaimed 2006 epic Blood Mountain, which was voted the No. 2 album of that year by Revolver magazine.

Tracklisting for Crack the Skye is as follows:

01. Oblivion
02. Divinations
03. Quintessence
04. The Czar
(I) Usurper
(II) Escape
(III) Martyr
(IV) Spiral
05. Ghost of Karelia
06. Crack The Skye
07. The Last Baron

As with each of their previous releases, the packaging for the new album will be as bold and breathtaking as the music contained within. Multiple packaging formats are expected. Details to be revealed in the near future.

Until then, Mastodon have been asked to support label-mates Metallica in Europe this coming summer 2009. Confirmed dates are as follows:

06/14 - Hartwall Arena - Helsinki, FIN
06/15 - Hartwall Arena - Helsinki, FIN
06/17 - Spektrum - Oslo, NOR
06/22 - Datch Forum - Milan, ITA
06/24 - Palalottomatica - Rome, ITA
07/13 - Palacio de Deportes - Madrid, Spain
07/16 - Hallenstadion - Zurich, SWITZ
07/20 - Copenhagen Forum - Copenhagen, DEN
07/22 - Copenhagen Forum - Copenhagen, DEN
07/23 - Copenhagen Forum - Copenhagen, DEN
07/27 - Copenhagen Forum - Copenhagen, DEN

Additional dates to be announced.

All these Mastodon fans and no one added a picture yet. You lazy fucks. I have Remission from this band and thought it was pretty mean. Still haven't heard the alst album except the single. I'll need to do that before this. Good news nonetheless.

Seriously, why do so many bands do that silent crap? Especially when a song plays, then in the song in 10 minutes of silence, and then another song picks up afterwards. All on the same track.

Its fucking annoying.

It (arguably) worked for Thrice...kinda.

And so far, so good for Mastodon.

so its really the fourth element after all - interesting that two of this decade's most interesting bands have chosen that topic.
I'm hoping for something extremely extraordinary and that they're going to make it so fucking proggy that every of their fans hates it but me.

he was on blood mountain as well.
I can't find the link anymore but Troy Sanders mentioned in an interview that the album was inspired by bands like Journey, King Crimson, Yes, Kansas and Frank Zappa. so I hope it's really gonna be proggy as hell and everyone's pouring shit over it while it's gonna end up on top of my 2009-list.

Mastodon is always great, but I kind of feel like they're starting to get overplayed. They're awesome, to be sure, but when I feel like everywhere I go I'm hearing "Crystal Skull" or "Blood and Thunder" it starts to get old. Nonetheless, I'm sure this will re-excite me about the band.
