I'm just getting into Mastodon, so this is good timing, I'll get a really nice, immediate feel for how their sound has changed/progressed.

i'm excited

so its really the fourth element after all - interesting that two of this decade's most interesting bands have chosen that topic.
I'm hoping for something extremely extraordinary and that they're going to make it so fucking proggy that every of their fans hates it but me.

I can't find the link anymore but Troy Sanders mentioned in an interview that the album was inspired by bands like Journey, King Crimson, Yes, Kansas and Frank Zappa. so I hope it's really gonna be proggy as hell and everyone's pouring shit over it while it's gonna end up on top of my 2009-list.

Mastodon is always great, but I kind of feel like they're starting to get overplayed. They're awesome, to be sure, but when I feel like everywhere I go I'm hearing "Crystal Skull" or "Blood and Thunder" it starts to get old. Nonetheless, I'm sure this will re-excite me about the band.
