Hendrix's New Woodstock Footage Unearthed

2026-08-21 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 0 Comments
Previously unseen footage of Jimi Hendrix's legendary Woodstock performance has emerged in a new concert film, 57 years after the guitarist closed the festival.

The black-and-white material was recorded by Albert Goodman, then a 22-year-old drama student at Bard College. Goodman reportedly gained access to the stage by following a friend carrying a guitar and was mistaken for a member of the official film crew.

Positioned behind percussionist Juma Sultan, Goodman set up his camera approximately 15 feet from Hendrix and captured the performance using two previously recorded open-reel videotapes.

The footage includes Purple Haze, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Message to Love Hear My Train a Comin' and Hendrix's celebrated interpretation of The Star-Spangled Banner.

Goodman retained the tapes for three decades before making them available to Hendrix's family. They now appear in Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock — A Second Look, which premiered on YouTube on August 18, marking the performance's 57th anniversary.
