Metallica Explain Album Title 2008-07-17 by Trey STAFF | 32 Comments |
On the title of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic":
James Hetfield: "'Death Magnetic', at least the title, to me, it's… It had something to do with… It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [ALICE IN CHAINS] and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away. And the concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point. So that's kind of the subject matter."
On bassist Robert Trujillo's contributions to the new record and the band's overall sound:
James Hetfield: "I don't really have to say it, but I will — he's an amazing bass player; very competent. He can play pretty much anything we throw at him. Not only that, but obviously [Robert] playing with his fingers brings a fuller sound. He — and no disrespect to Jason [Newsted, Rob's predecessor in METALLICA] — but Rob has already written more on this album than Jason had in his whole 14 years. A lot of that had to do with us not being willing, and I totally understand that, but just his material seemed to gel better. It feels as though we've known him forever, basically, is what it feels like. And there's still times when I see him in pictures with us, and I go, 'Oh, yeah! He's in our band. Dude, we kick ass even more now.' It's a good feeling."

Death Magnetic...The meaning seems to be very similar to what I thought it would mean...especially the bit about some people being attracted to death and some not.
|
| |
I can not really say that the connection between the album title and that explanation makes real sense to me, but I can see where they're coming from.
|
| |
I wish Metallica would get martyred...
|
| |
yeah, ya know, the big white elephant in the living room.
|
| |
well ok
|
| |
I don't get the "big white elephant in the living room" comment...
|
| |
why does it have to be a white elephant?
|
| |
Album title sucks!
|
| |
I'm pumped to hear the bass parts now.
|
| |
Metallica should not pretend to be intelligent.

The elephant in the room comment is a common saying. it means there is a big problem that everyone ignores anyways. i too think its kinda gay
death magnetic now makes alot more sense. there's actually a whole section of freudian psychology dedicated to understanding thanatos or the 'death drive,' which is what metallica is trying to convey with the album title.
because when they thought death magnetic, they were definitely thinking freud
|
| |
which, in turn, probably made them think about penis.
|
| |
Man you guys are ruthless aren't ya.
Go Metallica! Yea!
|
| |
personally i LOVE the title 'Death Magnetic' it has a very sort of street, pulp thrash ring to it because it's so bold and polarizing, almost in a municipal waste kind of way, which to me is a good thing.
anyone else frequenting the site? the stuff DOES sound great.

Death Magnetic is very 1980's thrash metal sounding
unfortunately...THATS A BAD THING
|
| |
These days with Metallica some people are never pleased; If they're like modern metal they're bad, if they go back to sounding like they did in the 80's, they're bad.
Personally, I dig everything they've put out. The album title isn't amazing but I like it and can't wait to get it in September.

Death Magnetic is very 1980's thrash metal sounding
unfortunately...THATS A BAD THING Except for the fact that Metallica actually created amazing albums with that sound. Time will tell if they can do it again. For better or for worse I have faith that they can.
|

Okay, since no one else will ask it...
Why not "Magnetic Death"?
|
| |
^^^ Because it sounds too much like MEGA...DETH?
Heh.
But I agree. This Message Edited On 07.17.08This Message Edited On 07.17.08

Damn James, forgetting who's in your band again, eh?
|
| |
ill still be diggin on james hetfield.
|

If this miserable band can somehow pull of something even remotely resembling that Mercyful Fate medley they did ten years ago, I'd be much impressed. Maybe they can forget about following trends and just make the kinda Metal they want to make. Why is every other giant Metal band capable of still putting out great product and retaining a high degree of musical integrity except for these clowns.

Thats cus its cool to hate Metallica.
I like them, all of their albums have had some good songs on, even St Anger. This Message Edited On 07.18.08

I agree with Talos, people complain metallica follow trends and whatnot, however, those people too are following trends by jumping on the "hate metallica" bandwagon. Which means if you were in their shoes, you'd do exact same thing. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to put 2 and 2 together.
|

"Dude, we kick *** even more now.'"
Dude, grow up now.
|
| |
it's a horrible album title
|
| |
some of you all are being idiotic. there is no "hate metallica" bandwagon. there's a "hate St. anger" bandwagon. and a good reason for it too
|
| |
the album art is a giant vagina.
|
| |
xxBattery21xx obviously likes Tower Of Power. I like Metallica. Load, St Anger, MoP, whatever.
|
| |
Wow. James Hetfield is, like, really eloquent and stuff.
