Cynic Finish Recording

2008-06-30 by Athom EMERITUS | 18 Comments
Cynic have wrapped up the recording and mixing of their upcoming, yet unnamed, album. The album will be their debut with Season of Mist Records and the follow-up to the progressive metal classic "Focus" (1993).

"We're really excited to share this new collection of songs with you. It's an honest record, and a really enjoyable listening experience. Takes you on a journey into the center of your heart and mind. Many moods and colors to occupy the sonic landscapes. It feels like Cynic! All I ask is that you surrender and allow. All you really need to do is show up with open ears. The music will do the work for you. I promise."
- Paul Masvidal (guitar/vocals)

I still don't really know how to react to this. Strange. Their music was so cutting edge for its time. I wonder how they're going to update their sound so it's not just robot vox and interesting jazz harmonies (which has since been copied over and over by the likes of LTE and MotW).

When this album finally comes out I'm gunna wanna be alone with the disc for quite some time....I mean, behind closed doors and all, with the lights nice and dim and a tub full of petroleum jelly and napkins by my side. If there's a bonus disc, I'll talk to 'album proper' about a potential three-way. See, I've messed up in the past, but I'm not gunna let this one slip right through my jellied hands. I'm gunna let this one know just how strongly I feel about it right from the start. And, promise to never take it's presence for granted. Or, overlook its needs. Not again. Not ever. Never.

There are a couple demo songs floating around Youtube that I wasn't too impressed with. I'm hoping those will be better by the time they're officially released.

The new songs are very prog rock-influenced and don't sound as death metalish as Focus. The new vocoder is a HELL OF ALOT BETTER than the old one too.
This is gonna be great.

The leaked tracks were sick, sounded just like additional Focus tracks. But really, who can complain?

I'm stoked for this.
