Chicks Don't "Think" About Music

2008-02-19 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 32 Comments
BBC Music Editor Lesley Douglas has caused a bit of a stir in radioland, after controversially claiming that men intellectualise music, while women tend to be more impulsive.

Said Ms. Douglas: "For women, there tends to be a more emotional reaction to music. Men tend to be more interested in the intellectual side of the music, the tracks, where albums have been made, that sort of thing."

Her comments come in response to a campaign by BBC Radio 6 listeners to oust DJ George Lamb, a total hottie who's been drafted by the Beeb to attract more female listeners to the thirtysomething male-dominated channel. The clearly intellectual campaigners have gone so far as to create a website, GetLambOut.org.uk, in support of their cause.

Music is totally emotional for me, that's why I love it.

If I didn't know what amp Paul McCartney used on Sgt. Pepper I wouldn't listen to it.

I think she's right tho. My experience leads me to believe that men are interested in the different facets of music a fair amount more than women.

That does make some sense I guess. Women on the average are more emotional than men.

lol misogyny.

But really, I don't see how sex would have anything to do with how people listen to music.
Stupid fangirls are just as dumb as fanboys.

The title says it all really. A shame, considering when someone's obsessed with music and 'thinks in music' day in and out.

Though I think the emotional side comes as a natural aspect when "thinking" about music. At least that's how I feel it.

I'm kind of obsessed with music really. Most of my day is made up by it and I'm vary rarely without my ipod on.

I am also interested in the whole theory behind the music and the facts about where it was recorded etc.

However some women do feel the same, so it's not entirely true...

I agree with this. Metal is a very technical genre (at least some of its subgenres) and is mostly listened to by Guys. Rap/mainstream has little to no talent and is mostly listened to by women.

A girl at a party said it best when one of my friends put on metal. She said, "How am I supposed to dance to this?"

Comparing mainstream rap/pop to metal is kinda dumb and pointless IMO

Thats a pretty interesting idea/article. I think there's some truth to it. I definitely feel a little sense of pride knowing things about bands, albums, etc. Things like how on blink's self-titled album there are parts where mark plays a fender XI and tom sings into a rotating mic. I can't say ive had a conversation about that kind of stuff with a female.

That was a very interesting article, especially BBC hiring a personality DJ to attract more females to their audience.

Thirteen year old girls have the shittiest music tastes, they only care about how catchy a song is, thats basically it. Guys care about the talent of the band, or the deepness lyrics, or the complexity and originality of the song. Now grown women is a different story. They like kinda pussier stuff, but so do men. I think as teenagers, guys like better stuff (generalizing) and as adults it's rather even.

I also talked to a girl who liked Hannah Montanna and said. "Well she can't sing well, she doesn't write any of her music, she doesn't play any instruments, and she has zero originality when it comes to everything else with pop."

She responded, "Well her songs are catchy and fun to dance to. Besides, I don't really care about the singer, more of the song. I like Lip Gloss by Lil Mamma but I don't care about her. Plus Hannah's show is really funny."(I then tortured her for hours upon hours.)

Girl's suck. So does their taste. (But they have boobies so I forgive them.)

Girls being more emotional than guys in general is the case a lot of the time but not always. Music is no different; there's plenty of females out there that take a normally male-esque approach to music, and there's lots of girls that like original, not necessarily catchy music, they're just outnumbered by the "normal" girls.

I don't necessarily disagree with the premise, but I thought the second section of the article, by Caitlin Moran, was profoundly stupid.

I think its a completely accurate statement. My girlfriend absolutely loves music of all kinds but she doesn't really seem to care about the technical side of it. I dont think its sexest or anything at all. I mean if someone said "Women seem to have a bigger connection to infants than men" its just a fact, not an opinion. Its how were made. For whatever reason guys (especially musicians like myself) care about everything that it takes to create their favorite music.

Guys aren't exempt from the superficial temptations of a band's image or the studio enhanced catchiness of a song.

Hold up comments on pieces of card as you dance?

I don't see why there's a hoohaa (yeah, I said it) regarding this new male DJ. As far as the comment goes, there's probably a bit of truth to it, but it's far too generalised. I swear some 12 year old boys only like some bands because the lead singer has facial hair, it's follicle envy.
