Radiohead Deny Survey Data 2007-11-08 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 11 Comments | Radiohead have issued a response to a survey released yesterday which suggested that only 38% of those who downloaded Radiohead's In Rainbows album actually paid for the privelege.
XL Recordings, which will release the album physically in the UK on December 31, has issued the following update: "In response to purely speculative figures announced in the press regarding the number of downloads and the price paid for the album, the group’s representatives would like to remind people that, as the album could only be downloaded from the band’s website, it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales.
"However, they can confirm that the figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project."
Radiohead's former label Parlophone/EMI will issue a limited edition box set containing all of the band's previous albums on December 10, available on either CD, digital download or USB flash drive, but this has not been endorsed by the band. Suggestions have been rife that the label chose the date, the same week the pre-ordered discboxes of In Rainbows are due to be mailed out, as punishment for Radiohead's decision to self-release the album.

I heard they made out alright.
| | | The record label companies are saying that they failed so other bands dont do the same, because what Radiohead did is bad for the record label companies.
| | | There's so many people saying how well this album did. I even saw an article stating the band made around 6 million dollars in record sales for In Rainbows. Obviously, that's not true.
| | | Obviously, not everyone who downloaded the album off there site took part in the survey!
| | | Yeah what happend to 1.3 million copies @ average price of 5 pounds= about 10.3 million. Is that bogus?
| | | radiohead have enough money to make stay even, even if they lose money, cause i sure as hell dont know many ppl who would pay for something that is begging to be downloaded for free. still, as long as theyre still making good music its A OK
xx
| | | I heard that 70% of people paid for it.
| | | I paid for the disc set! Can't wait to get the vinyl.
| | | They did make good. It was a digital download. No means of manufacturing had to be taken in to account besides recording, studio time, mastering, and producing. Selling digital copy is practically free of cost for them to make since it just had to be upped.
Big win. This Message Edited On 11.08.07
| | | Im glad they're putting the kabosh on these speculations, but i still want to know the exact figures in sales out of curiosity.
| | | Y'know, Radiohead are millionaires. They could probably completely retire from doing anything profit-generating for the rest of their lives without having to cut back on any luxury or anything. I guess they don't really give a fuck if you pay for In Rainbows or not, otherwise they wouldn't have included an option to download the whole thing for free.
On a side note, I'm glad I didn't pay cos the album was so-so.
