good run
|

i swear releasing a self titled is the kiss of death for these bands
|

Gutted
|

Seems weird to say "we can't do this anymore" and then play a couple shows 6 weeks later.
|
| |
Farewell shows aren't uncommon. They're doing it so the fans can have a special moment.
God tier band whose legend will only grow in absence.
|
| |
We're gonna need another 10 year anniversary tour with Hotelier arent we
|
| |
honestly trying to not be sad over this, at least we get a final show.
If they had just played these Coheed/TBS shows and called it a day i would never shut up about it.
Love these guys so much.

@josh and sowing
I mean it’s just a four hour drive to Chicago and then pack it up and play at home. It’s not really that weird imo, it would’ve been more weird if they didn’t do it tbh.
Like if they didn’t do one last headliner here that would’ve led me to believe that they just fucking hate it and each other and just wanted it to be over. This is at least leaving things on a positive note to me.

nearer my god should have sold millions. it makes sense they're taking a break now.
|
| |
I said it in the album thread but it just makes no sense to me that these guys never really blew up. They peaked commercially with Albatross, Midwest emo was the craze back then i guess, but god damn they got so much better when they stopped with that and did their own thing. Draw Down the Moon not selling much is an even bigger shocker to me. It still has all of the great songwriting of Nearer My God but wrapped in a pop rock vibe that even my own mother likes. She fucking loves Go Down Together. And then obv the self titled just tore it all down and it’s glorious.
I swear to god in 10 years people will really be wondering why these guys never got bigger. And I’ll never forgive our local alt station for not giving them the time of day. They basically blew the careers up of a few other STL bands and then when one is actually doing something interesting they tell them to fuck off. It’s infuriating.

| |
I agree people are definitely going to love this band in hindsight as one of those if you know you know groups that go down as music legends but I'm not surprised they never blew up. Albatross got the midwestern emo revival fans (me) but then Dealer's switch to a moodier indie/post-rock shook off some of those fans, then Nearer My God hit the avante-garde experimental people hard but left behind anyone from the prior 2, and then they went full blown pop-rock which shook the experimental people off, and then everyone loved Self-Titled.
TLDR their constant genre shifting happened in an order that turned people away rather than continually gaining new followers. Which is badass and I respect it but is not great for money.
|
| |
I think you’re spot on. But I don’t think they’d have it any other way. I mean of course I’m sure they’d love to be big and successful but I think truly if they could go back and just be a midwest emo band and not evolve at all and make a lot more money, all four of them would say fuck no.
They did everything on their terms and that’s partly why they’re one of favorite bands. I say that to people all the time, if you don’t like one record check out another. None of them are the same.
|
| |
Fuck, and I never got the opportunity to see them live…..
|
| |
Sad week. If you can somehow make it to St. Louis or Chicago, do it. One of the best live bands I've seen tbh.
|
| |
I say that to people all the time, if you don’t like one record check out another. None of them are the same.
So if I love the debut and Nearer My God, but don't really vibe with the s/t, where should I go next?
|
| |
Probably Dealer, I don’t think you’d vibe with Draw Down the Moon tbh but ya never know.
Dealer is a more post rock version of Albatross and Draw Down the Moon is a more pop version of Nearer My God. S/T is just a really unhinged amalgamation of them all imo
|
| |
Will give it a shot!
|
| |
Dealer is great. It was the last one I cared for, but they are a good band and I wish them well.
|
| |
These guys were really great live when I saw them but I just can’t stand the singers falsetto and he does it ALL the time
|
| |
Man, I saw them open for mewithoutYou when mwy was touring on Pale Horses and it was an unbelievable show. Conor played trumpet or french horn or WHATEVER during Nine Stories and it was awesome. I believe Dealer had just come out or was about to come out because that was in 2015.
I know they've been a band for 14 years, but it is weird to see them go on hiatus at this point. They had just come off what was probably their biggest tour as far as audience size goes- not to mention the last album was critically acclaimed, though I'm not sure about it's commercial success. I've not been a fan for a while, but I still hope this is temporary.

| |
Last smidley album is one of my favs so hoping we still get smidley stuff
|
| |
I would be shocked if we didn’t tbh. Honestly I’d bet on it coming next year. I think I remember seeing demos for it on the Foxing Patreon but I didn’t wanna listen to that before I heard the real thing… but that might’ve been demos for the last record under a different name.
|
| |
I still want to hear the unreleased S/T demos & b-sides everyone was talking about
|
| |
And anyone that hasn’t watched their Live at the Grandel video needs to get on it.

Best live record ever tbh
|
| |
@sowing
Well the Patreon is going free after the break up so you’ll get your wish. Its also nice to know they have a few song ideas they have in their back pocket if they decide to come back to it.
|
| |
Saw them in 2018 with PBBT just after the release of Nearer My God and it's one of the best shows I've ever been to. Hope it's a short hiatus and I'll have the opportunity to see them again in the future.
|
| |
Wow, I just saw them last week in Berkeley, CA (went for C&C). They are quite impressive and liked them more than TBS and I had never heard of them.
|
| |
Well now’s the time amigo. But I dickride these guys big time, favorite active band… for now : (
