RIP Ahmad Jamal

2023-04-18 by JefferyPigglestein | 10 Comments
Influential jazz pianist, composer and bandleader Ahmad Jamal passed away on April 16th (aged 92) from prostate cancer complications.

Born Frederick Russell Jones in Pittsburgh in 1930, he took up piano at age 3, studying both Western classical music and jazz in equal measure and by 14 he was already earning the praise of one jazz piano legend Art Tatum. Jamal's understated and economical playing style was not a favourite of jazz critics and writers for much of his career, but proved far more influential among actual jazz musicians, notably Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett and even trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis.

In fact, Davis is known to have been close friends with Jamal, and to have used his performances as example for how he wanted his own band to perform. In his autobiography, Davis says about Jamal: "He knocked me out with his concept of space, his lightness of touch, his understatement, and the way he phrased notes and chords and passages."

If you read Davis' autobiography, he had tremendous respect for Jamal's playing. TBH, didn't know he was still alive but hard RIP, making it to 92 is no joke.

Seems like he lived a long, full life with a wealth of experiences. Sleep well.

Legend. 1:40 of the live rendition of “what’s new?” on the Pershing square album sounds like hip hop (1958)
